Brodeur will participate in practice Friday as a part of a tryout, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Brodeur, if he makes the team, will provide a veteran backup presence behind Jake Allen in Brian Elliot's absence. The 42-year-old goaltender entered the season looking for a starting gig, but with a 2.51 GAA and .901 save percentage last season, couldn't find what he was looking for. The signing will give him at least a temporary shot between the pipes, though his long-term prospects don't bode well unless Brian Elliott's lower-body injury turns out worse than just week-to-week.

Brodeur says he would consider joining the Canadiens if the team made him a contract offer, reports TSN.ca. "This is Carey Price's team," said the free agent goaltender. "I would definitely still want to be the No. 1 goalie, but it wouldn't bother me to play in only 20 to 25 games during the season if I know I'll have fun playing within a winning team." Brodeur, who has played all 21 of his NHL seasons with the Devils, delivered a 19-14-6 record, 2.51 GAA and .901 save percentage last season. The Devils did not re-sign him, choosing instead to go with Cory Schneider as their top dog. The Habs have Peter Budaj and Dustin Tokarski on contract, so it would be odd to ink the 42-year-old Brodeur. But stranger things have happened. Marty's best fantasy days are far in the rear-view mirror, regardless of where (or if) he lands.

Although Martin Brodeur hasn't signed yet, it's still very unlikely that he would return to New Jersey as a player. New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said that the team and Brodeur have come to an understanding that they're both moving on. "It's a progression thing - that is Marty knowing what it is to be a No. 1 goaltender and to have that feeling and that's exactly what he feels Cory needs," Lamoriello said. "We feel the same way. We went through one year a different way. So, I think it's time to go forward, but never negate what Marty has brought nor was the door ever shut. It was a mutual understanding of what's best for both parties and Marty will always be a Devil." Brodeur will probably rejoin the Devils' organization in a front office capacity after he hangs up his skates.

Martin Brodeur is "still looking for the right fit" as the free agent market dies down. Brodeur is willing to play for a non-contender, but he'd like to play "a lot" in that case. Ultimately, it wouldn't be shocking if he doesn't end up with a contract going into the preseason. As great as his career has been, he's not the same goaltender he once was. Which is to be expected at the age of 42, but it's still the reason why he hasn't gotten an offer to his liking yet. Brodeur might end up signing during the season though if a team needs a replacement after one of their goaltenders suffers a major injury.

Although Martin Brodeur is no longer under contract with New Jersey, it's clear that he still has a strong relationship with the Devils. Evidence on that could be seen on Monday as his three sons, Anthony, Jeremy, and William all reported for the Devils' development camp. Anthony was drafted by the Devils in 2013, so his presence was expected, but Jeremy and William are Anthony's younger, twin brothers and can't be drafted until 2015. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello contacted Martin Brodeur to see if they would be interested in attending New Jersey's development camp. Lamoriello thinks Brodeur will eventually join the Devils' organization on the management side once he decides to hang up his skates.

Free agent goaltender Martin Brodeur isn't ruling out the idea of signing a new contract during next season's regular schedule."On or around July 1, we explored a few possibilities for Marty that made somewhat sense. That didn't come to fruition," Brodeur's agent, Pat Brisson, was quoted as saying in the Bergen Record. "Marty has a lot to offer, but it will be the right fit and this may come later this summer or even early in the season. He is in no rush until the right fit appears. "In the meantime he is getting ready the same way he has the past 20 seasons." Brodeur, 42, is a sure-fire nominee for the Hall of Fame. Many feel he is the greatest goalie in NHL history. Last season, with the Devils, he had 19 wins in 39 games and a GAA of 2.51.

As he hunts for a new employer on the free-agent market, Martin Brodeur might be the victim of his own formidable shadow, which he would cast on a team's No. 1 goaltender, even as the most willing and conscientious of backups. That's the opinion of New York Post hockey columnist Larry Brooks, who, like most hockey followers, are waiting to see where the future Hall of Fame goalie winds up as a free agent, if anywhere. Brooks suggests two destinations: Columbus, where Sergei Bobrovsky has established himself as an unassailable No. 1 over the past two seasons, and where Curtis McElhinney is the backup for a young, growing team with championship aspirations. "And though the dynamics in Pittsburgh are difficult to read, it is impossible to believe the Penguins wouldn't be better served with Brodeur rather than Thomas Greiss as the alternative to Marc-Andre Fleury." Brooks writes.

Martin Brodeur isn't in a rush to find a team to sign with. "We are looking at different scenarios, but there's no timetable on anything," said Brodeur's agent, Pat Brisson, in an email. He's taking his time while searching for the best fit.

Martin Brodeur's priority is to win another Stanley Cup, though his role also will be important to him in where he decides to play next year, according to TVA's Louis Jean. Brodeur is set to be an unrestricted free agent. Jean reports that Brodeur would be OK with a one-year deal and says that the Blackhawks, Bruins, Penguins and Maple Leafs have expressed interest. "If I get a job as a No. 1, I think I'm able to handle the workload of 50 to 60 games," Brodeur told Sportsnet. "If I don't, and I get a backup job on a team I feel has a chance to win the Stanley Cup, anything between 20 to 30 games I'd be comfortable with in the right situation." It's unlikely the 42-year-old is brought in to start anywhere at this stage of his career.
