After starter Felix Hernandez was knocked around for six runs (five earned) over six innings, Gallardo came on for the first time since June 23 and saved the Mariners bullpen plenty of work by getting through the last three frames in fairly efficient fashion. Tuesday's outing was an example of the value that the veteran right-hander brings to the relief corps in his new role, and the fact that he fired only 36 pitches -- after needing 50 to get through the same amount of innings in his bullpen debut -- was certainly encouraging in its own right. The 31-year-old has now allowed just Tuesday's earned run on three hits across six innings in his two relief appearances.

Gallardo was credited with his first save of the season in Friday's 13-3 win over the Astros, firing a scoreless three innings in which he allowed two hits and a walk. He also recorded a strikeout.

The veteran right-hander's debut as a long reliever was a rousing success, although Gallardo still worked up to 50 pitches in just three frames. It was a prudent, low-leverage opportunity to roll out the 31-year-old in his new role, as the Mariners held a comfortable lead when he entered. While he naturally doesn't figure to see many save chances, Gallardo is likely to work multiple innings in the overwhelming majority of his outings, affording him what should be a fair amount of hold opportunities.

Recently recalled pitching prospect Andrew Moore will take Gallardo's turn in the rotation Wednesday, though it's unclear if he'll continue to do so after that. Gallardo has struggled as a starter this season, notching just four quality starts in 14 tries and compiling a 6.30 ERA and 57:32 K:BB across 75.2 innings. The 31-year-old hasn't appeared out of the bullpen since his rookie season with the Brewers, when he notched a 2.89 ERA across 9.1 innings (three appearances).

Gallardo is in danger of losing his rotation spot after the Mariners called up pitching prospect Andrew Moore, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

Gallardo has been fairly ineffective this season, with Saturday's five-run outing summing up his struggles on the season. Due to this, Moore seems to be in line to replace either him or Sam Gaviglio in the rotation moving forward, although the needle appears to be leaning toward Gallardo at this point. No official word has come out yet, but Gallardo's upcoming start against the Tigers may be his last chance to salvage a starting role in Seattle.

His 6.30 ERA is the third highest mark among 84 qualified starters, trailing only Bronson Arroyo (7.01) and Kevin Gausman (6.60). Meanwhile his 1.57 WHIP also ranks in the bottom 10 in MLB.

Gallardo allowed two runs in the first inning, but he cruised from there, allowing a total of five baserunners over his final five frames. It was his first quality start in nearly a month and just his fourth in 13 outings this season. The peripherals suggest Gallardo has been a run or so better than his 6.11 ERA would suggest, but that's still not saying much, and with a road matchup against the Rangers on tap for this weekend, there's little reason to give him serious consideration in mixed leagues.

The 31-year-old hasn't notched a victory since May 15, a matter he'll try to remedy in a Monday road start at Target Field versus the Twins.

He lines up to face the Twins at Safeco Field in his next start.

Gallardo's disastrous night basically defied description and was doomed from the start, with Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia touching him up with a run-scoring double and three-run home run, respectively, in the first. Garcia tagged him for a solo shot in the third as well, and matters completely unraveled in the next frame when five additional runs crossed the plate. The outing was Gallardo's shortest of the season, while the earned runs were easily the highest amount he's allowed on the campaign. The 31-year-old right-hander had actually produced quality starts in three of the previous five trips to the mound and had pitched reasonably well in the other two outings over that span. Gallardo will try to put the nightmarish results behind him when he takes on the Nationals on the road next Thursday.
