Eric Chavez has retired from baseball. Chavez has battled a nagging knee issue this season and the 36-year-old has decided to hang it up rather than continue rehabbing. He won six Gold Gloves and was one of the better players in the AL during the early 2000s. Injuries wrecked a big chunk of his career, but he deserves credit for making it back to be a useful player for a few years before the injury bug ultimately did him in. "I'm very lucky," Chavez said Tuesday. "I just enjoyed competing and being on the field. There's nothing like winning at the major-league level."

Eric Chavez (knee) is expected to be placed on the disabled list. Chavez has been dealing with a left knee injury all season, so it's not a big surprise. The Diamondbacks have yet to make an official announcement on a move, but Will Harris has joined the team.

Eric Chavez has been dealing with a left knee injury all season. Chavez felt something in the knee pop the day before the Diamondbacks' trip to Australia, and he's yet to experience any improvement. The ailment helps to explain why he's seen so little time at third base (with Martin Prado moving to left field) following Mark Trumbo's (foot) injury. The D'Backs will have a discussion with Chavez after Sunday's game to determine what to do next.

Eric Chavez went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run against the Cubs on Thursday. Chavez, 36, is hoping to make the roster as a back-up corner infielder. He would be second-in-command behind Martin Prado at third and Paul Goldschmidt at first. Chavez has been productive over the last two seasons, posting an .829 OPS almost exclusively against right-handed pitching.

Diamondbacks re-signed INF Eric Chavez to a one-year contract. There's no word on the financials of the deal. Chavez has revitalized his career over the past two seasons batting .281/.341/.488 with 25 homers in 567 plate appearances. It's not a great spot for him, as he'll be a backup at third and first base, but Chavez preferred to stay close to his Phoenix home.

Eric Chavez has re-signed with the Diamondbacks, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. The 36-year-old, given up for dead years ago, has revitalized his career over the past two seasons with the Diamondbacks and Yankees. Since 2012, he's slashed 281/.341/.488 with 25 homers in 567 plate appearances. Chavez attracted league-wide interest on the open market, but he preferred to stay close to his Phoenix home. He'll back up both corner infield spots in 2014.
