With shortstop Jose Iglesias and outfielder Andy Dirks both expected to miss significant time due to injury, Detroit's decision-makers are hunting down contingency plans as we speak. Schierholtz slashed .251/.301/.470 with 21 homers and 68 RBI in his first full season with the Cubs last year. Barney is a lauded defender with experience at shortstop who won a Gold Glove at second base in 2012.

It's not known if the two sides have had trade discussions, but the Diamondbacks are in the market for a corner outfielder. Schierholtz, who turns 30 in February, batted .251/.301/.470 with 21 home runs and 68 RBI over 137 games this past season and is arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter.
