Schierholtz was designated for assignment Wednesday, MLB.com reports. With Kyuji Fujikawa activated from the DL, Schierholtz was DFA'd to make room on the roster. He'll head to waivers, and if he's cleared will likely be outrighted to Triple-A Iowa. On the year, Schierholtz is hitting just .192 with 33 RBI and 76 strikeouts in 313 at-bats.

Nate Schierholtz had a two-run homer and a double against the Red Sox on Monday. It looks like Schierholtz is showcasing himself against a team that has considered him in the past and still needs some outfield help. He's had a really tough year, with a .205 average and just four homers in 249 at-bats. Still, the Cubs haven't had much choice but to stick with him against righties.

Nate Schierholtz belted a three-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Marlins. The Cubs were already up 2-1 in the sixth after Starlin Castro's RBI double, but Schierholtz broke the game open with his blast. It's been a disappointing season so far for the outfielder, as he's hitting just .212/.266/.320 with three longballs.

Nate Schierholtz had a two-run triple in a loss to the Marlins on Sunday. The knock was Schierholtz' only hit in four at-bats. Despite being in the midst of a down year -- he's batting .221/.276/.321 after Sunday's game -- the triple was his third of the year. He can be left alone outside of the deepest of NL-only leagues.

Nate Schierholtz delivered a walk-off single in the ninth inning to lead the Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Mets on Tuesday. The hit was Schierholtz' third of the game. It was one of the few bright spots of the season thus far for Schierholtz, who is hitting .224/.280/.310 after hitting 21 home runs in a breakout 2013 season.

Nate Schierholtz went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Friday against the Brewers. Schierholtz went without a home run over his first 42 games this season, but he has done deep twice in his last four games. Perhaps he's finally ready to take off. After hitting .251 with 21 home runs and .770 OPS last season, the 30-year-old has been a big disappointment for the Cubbies in 2014.

Nate Schierholtz singled and ripped a solo homer against his former team in Monday's win over the Giants. It wasn't a cheapie, either, as Schierholtz put one over the deep right-center field wall. The longball was the outfielder's first of the season after he went deep a career-high 21 times last season. He's hitting just .214/.269/.292.

Nate Schierholtz continued his early season struggles, going 0-for-4 in Friday's loss to the Reds. Schierholtz, hitting in the cleanup spot in manager Rick Renteria's lineup, also left four runners on base in the contest. He's hitting a paltry .231/.241/.288 with no homers and four RBI in his first 13 games. If the bat doesn't start to heat up soon, he could begin losing playing time to Junior Lake, Justin Ruggiano or Ryan Kalish.

Nate Schierholtz went 4-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Cardinals. Schierholtz doubled to lead off the 11th inning against Trevor Rosenthal and came home to score on a three-run home run from Welington Castillo. With the four-hit night, the 30-year-old outfielder raised his batting average from .185 to .281. The joy of early April.

Nate Schierholtz singled and stole a base in four at-bats against the Angels on Tuesday. Schierholtz, not exactly known for his speed, stole his second base of the spring. He is only hitting .238 in 42 Cactus League at-bats, but has drawn some recent trade interest. He could be wearing a new uniform by the July 31 trade deadline.
