Reds manager Bryan Price said Friday that Jonathan Broxton (forearm) will start the season on the disabled list. He also said that Sean Marshall (shoulder) will begin the year on the DL, but that was a given. Broxton made his Cactus League debut this week as he works his way back from surgery last August to repair a torn flexor mass tendon. He should be ready sometime in April. With Broxton and Aroldis Chapman on the DL, JJ Hoover is the favorite for saves in Cincy for now.

Jonathan Broxton made his Cactus League debut on Monday against the Indians, tossing a perfect inning. Broxton relieved Mike Leake in the fifth inning, striking out one in his perfect frame. The hard-throwing right-hander had surgery in August to repair a torn flexor mass tendon. If everything continues to go well, he could be ready to contribute out of the bullpen on Opening Day.

Jonathan Broxton (forearm) could make his Cactus League debut on Monday. Broxton will throw a bullpen session on Friday with hitters standing in the box, which could be the last step before his spring debut. "If everything goes well with Jonathan, there's a chance he could throw an inning against Cleveland," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He'd obviously have to get through tomorrow's bullpen, but there's been no reason to think he's not going to pitch on the 17th." Broxton's status for Opening Day is up in the air.

Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday that it's "undecided" whether Jonathan Broxton (forearm) will be ready for Opening Day. Broxton faced hitters Tuesday, which is the first time he's done so since last August's surgery to repair a torn flexor mass tendon. "Arm-wise I feel great," Broxton said. "Command-wise I struggled today but that was the first time I faced batters since before the surgery. All of that will come around." Broxton will throw a bullpen session Thursday and possibly another live batting practice session before being cleared for game action. "We are all excited to see him back out. It's one step closer to getting him in games and get ready to help us," Price said. "We just don't know if he will be ready for Opening Day. That's undecided but certainly there's a chance he will be."

Jonathan Broxton (forearm) will throw another live bullpen session Tuesday. The next step, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay, is Broxton's Cactus League debut. The hefty right-hander is still recovering from August surgery to repair a flexor mass strain in his right forearm.

Jonathan Broxton (forearm) threw his third spring training bullpen session Tuesday but isn't close to appearing in a Cactus League game. "He threw great. He looks like he's ready to go," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We have to follow a throwing protocol to get him ready for games -- throw live batting practice, facing hitters, throwing his breaking ball. There is a ways to go for that." Barring setbacks, Broxton still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day.

Jonathan Broxton (forearm) threw off the mound Monday for the first time this spring. Broxton, who had surgery last August to repair a flexor mass strain in his right forearm, threw a total of 15 pitches and reported feeling fine. He will throw from a mound again in three days. Reds manager Bryan Price hasn't ruled out Broxton from being ready for Opening Day, but he can't afford any setbacks.

Reds transferred RHP Jonathan Broxton from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Greg Reynolds. Broxton had season-ending surgery Friday to repair a flexor mass strain in his right elbow.

Jonathan Broxton is expected to be sidelined for six months after undergoing surgery Friday to repair a flexor mass strain in his right elbow. That means he should finish up his rehab around the start of spring training, though whether or now he can get his arm in shape by the time the regular season rolls around remains to be seen. Broxton is owed a total of $16 million through the end of the 2015 season.
