Shields allowed three earned runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two across 6.2 innings Sunday against the Twins.
EDGE Analysis
Shields allowed only four baserunners in what was arguably his best start of the season. While not coming close to his form from a few seasons ago, Shields has been able to put together decent starts when pitching against favorable lineups or in favorable ballparks. He's not a great option in shallower leagues, but could be someone worth considering as a consistent source of innings in deeper leagues.

Shields allowed one run on two hits through six innings Tuesday, striking out four and walking zero in a no-decision against the Cardinals.
EDGE Analysis
This was easily the best start of the year for Shields, and he was only denied the win by a ninth-inning comeback from the Cardinals. Shields gave up a homer to Tommy Pham, the first batter he saw, and then proceeded to retire the next 15 consecutive hitters before allowing a hit to Kolten Wong in the sixth. This was also the first time this year that Shields hasn't walked a batter in a start. He's still carrying an unfavorable 19:17 K:BB through 35.1 innings, on top of a 5.35 ERA, but Tuesday's outing was a positive performance. Next up for Shields is a start at home against the Twins.

Shields (1-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and four walks across six innings Wednesday against the Mariners. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Shields was sharp through the first two innings Wednesday -- retiring six of the first seven batters he faced -- but he ran into trouble in the third frame, allowing a pair of runs on three hits and a walk. A shaky fifth inning (one run on two hits and two walks) and a solo homer from Mike Zunino in the sixth assured the veteran would remain winless for a fifth straight start. He now has just one quality start through six outings this year, and his 6.17 ERA is reflected in his unremarkable 15:17 K:BB through 29.1 innings. Shields will next take the mound Tuesday on the road against the Cardinals.

Shields (1-2) got tagged for seven runs on eight hits in the shutout loss to the Astros on Friday, tallying four strikeouts and four walks.
EDGE Analysis
Shields was keeping the Astros in check through three, but then allowed five runs in the fourth by way of four hits and some sloppy defense. The other two runs charged to him came in the sixth, when reliever Danny Farquhar entered with a couple of Shields' guys on base and allowed them to come around on a George Springer double. Shields was last used in relief on Wednesday in a 14-inning affair in Oakland (throwing 28 pitches), which could have affected his sharpness on Friday. Even so, he's struggling to keep guys off the bases, allowing 27 hits in 23.1 innings while issuing 13 walks against 11 strikeouts. He'll next see the Mariners at home.

Shields will take the mound against the Astros on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
There was some speculation that Shields would need to be pushed back in the rotation after appearing in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to Oakland, but that won't be the case. The 36-year-old was actually tagged with the loss during that affair, as he gave up a game-winning hit to Matt Olson after recording the first two outs of the inning. Don't expect there to be any limitations for Friday's outing, though a matchup against Houston's offense is never an easy assignment.

Shields may have his next start -- which was scheduled for Friday -- pushed back after he pitched in Wednesday's extra-innings loss to the A's.
EDGE Analysis
The White Sox's starter, Carson Fulmer, lasted just one inning, so manager Rick Renteria was ultimately forced to turn to Shields in the 14th inning after running through his bullpen. Shields was hit with the loss after allowing a two-out game-winning hit to Matt Olson. He only tossed 28 pitches, so the White Sox could choose to keep him on schedule for his Friday start, though with an off day Thursday, the team could also shift everyone in their rotation up by a day to afford Shields time before his next start.

Manager Rick Renteria said that Shields will make his next start Friday against the Astros, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shields was originally in line to start Monday's game against the Athletics, but the postponement of the entire weekend series with the Twins threw a wrench in the White Sox's pitching plans. The veteran now lines up to face off with Justin Verlander in the series opener.

Shields allowed one run on four hits and five walks while striking out six over 6.1 innings in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Rays.
EDGE Analysis
Shields walked all five batters over the first two innings, but escaped trouble. The 36-year-old right-hander managed to reign in his wayward offerings over the final 4.1 innings, keeping the game close and giving his mates a chance to steal a comeback win. Apart from the walks, this was easily the best of Shields' three starts. He's next in line to pitch Monday on the road against the Athletics.

Shields gave up three earned runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out one and walking one while picking up a no-decision in Chicago's 9-7 loss to the Tigers on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Shields was able to limit the damage in his five innings of work against Detroit despite giving up eight hits, but his ERA stands at 5.73 with a 1.36 WHIP through his first two starts of the season. Perhaps more troublingly, the 36-year-old has only struck out one batter over his first 11 innings of work. Once a pitcher capable of putting up 200-plus strikeouts a year and solid ratios, Shields has been a risky fantasy play for a while now, without a sub-5.00 ERA to his name since 2015. So far in 2018, it doesn't appear much has changed.

Shields (1-0) allowed four earned runs on five hits and one walk with no strikeouts over 6.0 innings in Thursday's win over the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran looked destined for a short outing Thursday after being tagged for four runs in the first inning, but Shields dug in and managed to hold the Royals scoreless over the next five innings. According to James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago, Shields' fastball velocity sat between 89-91 miles per hour, which is in line with where it has been over the last two seasons. Shields may have escaped with the victory Thursday, but getting tagged for four runs in one inning against what is projected to be one of the weaker lineups in baseball does not bode overly well for Shields as the season progresses. He's lined up to face Aaron Sanchez and the Blue Jays in his next start Wednesday.
