Cingrani (oblique) has started his throwing program, but he's still feeling some soreness and as a result isn't yet throwing from a mound, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.
EDGE Analysis
Cingrani's progress has been purposefully slow given the setbacks other Reds have had while recovering from their oblique injuries. "He is able to maintain his arm strength and range of motion," manager Bryan Price said. "However, not to the point yet where we would clear him to get up on the mound and start throwing [bullpen sessions]. We really want to focus on making sure the soreness is gone."

Cingrani (strained oblique) will begin a throwing program in the next few days, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Reds took extra precautions to make sure that Cingrani did not start throwing too soon and aggravate the injury. "That's one of the reason he didn't start throwing exactly when we anticipated he would be able to, to avoid any chance of that," manager Bryan Price said. "So we're doing everything we can to keep this particular injury from going and getting really sideways on us and being a long rehab."

Cingrani (oblique) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Reds have yet to make a corresponding move to replace Cingrani, but they were prompt in placing the lefty on the disabled list after Thursday's series finale. Cingrani allowed one hit in a scoreless frame Tuesday but did not appear in the final two games of the series. Wandy Peralta will be one of the Reds' main left-handers out of the bullpen unless they bring up another arm from Triple-A or continue to use Cody Reed as a reliever.

Cingrani allowed a double and a home run over 0.2 innings during Saturday's win over Milwaukee.
EDGE Analysis
Ryan Braun squared up Cingrani for a double and Eric Thames left the yard with his second bomb of the afternoon, so it wasn't like Cingrani was hit around by slap hitters. Additionally, the run was the first he's allowed of the season. Still, Cingrani appears to be out of the closer competition at this point, and Saturday's appearance was just his fourth of the campaign.

Cingrani could be part of the early season saves mix, with Raisel Iglesias behind schedule following his shower fall. Entering Sunday's spring training game, Cingrani has a 4.05 ERA over 6.2 innings, with six strikeouts and five walks.
EDGE Analysis
The walk ratio is representative of Cingrani's struggles last season when he did work at the end of the bullpen, as he had a 49:37 K:BB over 63 innings. Sometimes opportunity trumps skills, however, so he remains in the mix for the Reds in their unsettled bullpen.

Cingrani is working on another pitch to add to his repertoire in 2017, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The southpaw has relied on his mid 90s four-seam fastball heavily throughout his career, throwing it more than 87 percent of the time in 2016. He is working on a breaking pitch in order to mix things up and keep batters guessing. He led the Reds with 17 saves while posting a 4.14 ERA in 65 appearances last season, although he'll likely see fewer save opportunities in 2017 as the Reds are contemplating a four-man closer committee.

Cingrani could get a few saves in 2017, with the team contemplating a four-man closer committee.
EDGE Analysis
Judging from manager Bryan Price's quote, however, Cingrani is the fourth option, based on the possible game situation. "I would really like to see this particular game plan we have in place work out," Price said on Sunday. "We want to look at the end of the year and we see Storen and Iglesias and Lorenzen, in particular, with some saves. That may mean Cingrani as well, if he's the best guy we have for that situation in the ninth inning."

Cingrani agreed to a one-year, $1.825 million contract with the Reds on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
He was one of the worst regular closers in baseball throughout much of the year, posting a 4.14 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and six blown saves. The 27-year-old gave way to Raisel Iglesias more down the stretch, and with Drew Storen now on the team, it's looking like Cingrani may be confined primarily to a setup role to begin 2017.

Cingrani may begin 2017 as part of a closer committee, MLB.com reports. "...I do think the game is looking at finding more than one person who is comfortable throwing in the ninth inning, more than one person who is capable of throwing multiple innings in a setup role," manager Bryan Price said.
EDGE Analysis
Cingrani led the Reds with 17 saves in 2016, but he gave way to Raisel Iglesias quite a bit down the stretch with Price deploying Cingrani occasionally earlier in games depending on the matchups. Iglesias was used for multiple innings 17 times (32 appearances), and it sounds like Price wants to keep fluid back-end roles, using his best relievers in the highest-leverage situations, regardless of the inning, and sometimes for multiple frames. With Michael Lorenzen also in the back-end mix, the Reds' closer situation is murky as we approach spring training -- perhaps the most unappealing in baseball for fantasy purposes.

Cingrani worked around a pair of walks to record his 16th save Tuesday against the Rangers.
EDGE Analysis
It hasn't always been pretty, but Cingrani has now converted 11 straight save opportunities dating back to early June. The righty has held opponents scoreless in 11 of his last 12 appearances, but an implosion on Aug. 8 (five runs in 0.2 innings) still has Cingrani's ERA skewed to appear unimpressive at 3.54.
