Cardinals optioned LHP Marc Rzepczynski to Triple-A Memphis. Rzepczynski has thrown 27 pitches over the past two days, so the Cardinals wanted some fresh reinforcements for their bullpen for Tuesday's doubleheader. The southpaw should get another crack in the Cardinals' bullpen soon.

Cardinals recalled LHP Marc Rzepczynski from Triple-A Memphis. "Scrabble" earned his way back onto the Cardinals' major league roster by posting a 3.07 ERA in 44 innings at the Triple-A level. He will serve as a situational left-hander and mop-up man for first-place St. Louis.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak indicated Monday that Marc Rzepczynski's demotion wasn't just performance-based. Mo said that he "wasn't really seeing that drive this year" from Rzepczynski. "I noticed it early in spring, and it sort of just carried over. . You're coming in with opportunities to do things, and it just wasn't getting done." The left-hander has posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings since the start of the 2012 season. He'll try to get refocused and improve his results at Triple-A Memphis for a while.

Cardinals optioned LHP Marc Rzepczynski to Triple-A Memphis. "Scrabble" has posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings since the start of the 2012 season. He's simply not an effective lefty specialist at the moment.

Marc Rzepczynski (eye) will return to Grapefruit League action on Saturday. Rzepczynski has been out of action for a week after being struck below the eye by some debris while on a golf course. He's pretty much back to normal, though, and should be fine to start the season.

Marc Rzepczynski was told by a doctor Wednesday that 95 percent of the inflammation is gone from his left eye. Rzepczynski has another doctor's appointment on Friday morning and is hoping to be cleared at that time to return to Grapefruit League games. The lefty reliever should be fine for the start of the 2013 regular season.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny believes that Marc Rzepczynski (eye) will "be laid up for a while." "I think he's going to be laid up for a while," said Matheny. "He can't get work if he's in bed, so it's definitely not helping him get ready for the season." Rzepczynski, who was injured Friday when a golf ball struck him near his left eye, will be re-evaluated Monday. A clearer timetable should be known at that time, but it sounds like a DL stint to start the season is possible.

Marc Rzepczynski (eye) said that his vision is starting to return following a freak accident on a golf course Friday. Rzepczynski's eye and the area around it were "deeply bruised," but there's a "95 percent chance" he won't have permanent damage. The Cardinals are expected to reevaluate him Monday, so we should have a timetable for his return by early next week.

Mark Rzepczynski suffered a freak injury on Friday when a golf ball reportedly struck him near his left eye. Rzepczynski, who had been shut down for the past couple of days because of a sore biceps muscle, had been scheduled to pitch on Saturday but will no longer do so. There is no word yet on how long this injury could sideline him, but it could impact his ability to be ready for Opening Day.
