Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez could be activated from the disabled list sometime next week after recovering from a biceps injury, according to the Miami Herald. Fernandez has not pitched since he was diagnosed with a strained biceps on Aug. 8, but he will throw a bullpen session Thursday and could return shortly after. The team has still not decided what the next step would be for their young ace, but a simulated game and a minor league rehab start are both options. "There's a case with him we could run him to Jupiter and get him in [a minor league game]," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "But he may accomplish the same thing in a sim game. Just depends on when he's ready to amp it that way. But he feels great right now, real good." Fernandez is on track to return sometime in early September.

Fernandez was forced to leave his last start after just 76 pitches because of shoulder tightness was diagnosed with the biceps strain after further evaluation. The 23-year-old was just seven starts removed from returning from Tommy John surgery and will find himself back on the disabled list until at least Aug. 25. "During the game that fourth inning I threw a lot of pitches," Fernandez said. "My arm got a little tired, but I went out and pitched the fifth and obviously it wasn't the same. I was dragging my arm looking at the video. Decided to take me out of the game. Right about that night four to five hours later it started getting tight. Thank God it wasn't a big deal. Everything happens for a reason. That's the way that I take things. He's trying to teach me a lesson. Everything in life happens for a reason. That's how I take my life. As long as I'm healthy, I'm coming back."

The Miami Marlins placed pitcher Jose Fernandez on the disabled list Sunday because of a biceps strain, according to MLB.com. Fernandez had performed well since returning from Tommy John surgery in late July, tallying a 2.30 earned-run average and 53 strikeouts in 43 innings, but he will return to the DL after leaving his last start against the Atlanta Braves having thrown just 76 pitches. "I spoke to Jose this morning. I think he definitely has peace of mind as to what now. Hopefully the inflammation will go out of there and we can get him healthy, get him back," manager Dan Jennings said Sunday, adding that there is no timetable for a return. "I think it can vary. It will just be when that calms down. Now that we know and have it identified, I think we'll have a better understanding of exactly how aggressive to treat it."

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez returned to Miami on Saturday to have his right shoulder examined after experiencing tightness in the area during Friday's start at the Atlanta Braves, according to MLB.com. Fernandez threw 76 pitches Friday before exiting the game. He is questionable for Wednesday's start against the Boston Red Sox. The 23-year-old was coming off of a 112-pitch start in his last outing and left after a 38-pitch inning. "Obviously, I want to give my team a chance to win," Fernandez said. "I always want to be out there. But I think it was the right call by the manager. My two starts before this one have been long. I had that long inning, 38 pitches. So why risk it?" Fernandez is just seven starts removed from Tommy John surgery, and Saturday's exam likely will determine if a stint on the disabled list is necessary.

Fernandez (2-0) pitched seven scoreless innings Thursday against the Reds, giving up six hits while striking out nine and walking none in the win. Fernandez won for the second time in two outings since his return from Tommy John Surgery and improved to 14-0 in 22 career starts at Marlins Park. The 22-year-old threw 94 pitches and was still reaching 96 mph in the seventh and mixed in lots of off-speed stuff. He walked none and has yet to walk a batter in 13 innings this season -- all at home.

Fernandez will make his next start Thursday against the Reds due to an off-day in the Marlins' schedule next week, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. Without the off-day, Fernandez would have lined up to pitch against the Red Sox in Boston on Wednesday. As a result of the schedule adjustment, Tom Koehler is expected to take the ball Wednesday.

Fernandez (1-0) pitched six strong innings in his return from Tommy John surgery Thursday against the Giants, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six in a 5-4 victory. He issued no walks and helped his own cause with a solo home run. While it's not an elite performance, that's about as much as fantasy owners could ask for in Fernandez's first game back. The simple fact that he didn't walk a single batter in his return from Tommy John surgery just 13 months ago is remarkable, and Fernandez settled down impressively after letting the Giants rally for two runs in the first inning. He's come back throwing heat, but it's still possible that Fernandez's stats won't be quite as sharp this year as they were prior to his Tommy John surgery. Still, the Red Sox can't be looking forward to seeing him Wednesday.

Fernandez was reinstated from the 15-day DL prior to Thursday's scheduled start. Fernandez hasn't seen the mound in the majors since May of 2014, but after striking out 33 batters in five rehab starts, the team decided he's ready to return. He'll take on the San Francisco Giants and Matt Cain, who is also returning from the disabled list Thursday. Fernandez, the owner of a 2.25 ERA and 0.97 WHIP on his career, has proven he's a threat for a big outing every time he takes the hill. However, it's a bit unclear how long of a leash the 22-year-old will have in his first outing of 2015.

Fernandez remains the expected starter for Thursday's game against the Giants, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports. Fernandez was expected to return Thursday, and even allowing four runs on six hits in a rehab start won't keep him from that return date. It's been a little over a year since he last threw a pitch off a major league mound, but he'll look to pick up where he left off prior to the injury, posting a 2.44 ERA and 0.948 WHIP with 70 strikeouts over 51.2 innings last season.

Fernandez (elbow) was tagged for four runs on six hits (including a home run) over five innings in Saturday's rehab start at Double-A Jacksonville. Fernandez still managed to strike out eight batters and walked only two, so the Marlins will likely take the results with a grain of salt. On the whole, Fernandez looked impressive during his five-start rehab assignment split between Jacksonville and High-A Jupiter, showing no ill effects as he returns from Tommy John surgery. He's now scheduled to rejoin the Marlins and make his season debut Thursday against the Giants.
