Fernandez remains on track in his rehab and is expected to throw off of a mound in spring training for the first time since his May Tommy John surgery, the Miami Herald reports. The team has purposefully kept Fernandez' timetable flexible as the club is not interested in rushing back their injured ace. Marlins' President of Baseball Operations, Michael Hill, reiterated Monday that Fernandez is expected to make it back in the majors sometime in June or July. Over 224.1 career innings, Fernandez has posted a phenomenal 2.25 ERA and 0.97 WHIP with 257 strikeouts while establishing himself as a bona fide ace in the majors entering his age-22 season.

Fernandez (elbow) is currently throwing from 90 feet and should be ready to throw from a mound during spring training, Marlins manager Mike Redmond told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday. With his current progression, the Marlins are expecting a return from Fernandez in June or July. Fernandez had Tommy John surgery in May of 2014, and it's hardly surprising that the team is operating with a slightly longer timetable than the 12-month minimum pitchers typically require to return from the injury.

Fernandez (elbow) completed a second throwing session Friday, the Miami Herald reports. Fernandez threw on Wednesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery, and reported feeling "incredible" after Friday's session. There's obviously a long way to go in his recovery, but this week has been an encouraging sign for the 22-year-old. He's scheduled to throw again on Monday, but said he probably won't throw off a mound until the start of 2015. At this point, an early 2015 return is possible, but he'll likely miss at least the beginning of the season.

Fernandez (elbow) made 25 throws from 30 feet Wednesday and reported feeling good. It represents a positive first step in Fernandez's rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery, which was performed close to 20 weeks ago now, though it goes without saying that he still has several major hurdles to clear. The 22-year-old phenom was off to another incredible start before suffering the injury in May, posting a 2.44 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 70 strikeout in eight outings (51.2 innings). He still has top-five starting pitcher potential, but the uncertainty as to his return date will make him difficult to value at the start of next season, as the Marlins figure to be especially cautious with his recovery.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond told MLB Network Radio that Fernandez will begin to play catch in the coming days. According to Redmond, "everything his progressing perfectly" with Fernandez's recovery from Tommy John surgery. With the usual 12-to-18 month timetable for a recovery, Fernandez could return as early as mid-May if everything continues to progress at the optimal rate, but given his long-term value to the organization, it would hardly be surprising to see his recovery fall later on the range of potential outcomes.

Fernandez (elbow) will visit a doctor in Los Angeles on Thursday in hopes of receiving clearance to begin throwing in October, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports. Fernandez hasn't hit any snags in his recovery from Tommy John surgery at this point, but he hasn't really cleared any major hurdles, either. Once he starts resuming throwing, the Marlins should have a better idea for a timeline for his recovery, but the hope is that he'll be return to the rotation by the All-Star break.

Jose Fernandez underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Friday. He will now return to Miami where he will begin the rehabilitation and recovery process. If all goes well, Fernandez could be looking at a return to the Marlins before the end of the 2015 season, but fantasy owners shouldn't count on any serious returns until the 2016 campaign.

Jose Fernandez is scheduled to undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Friday. Fernandez was diagnosed earlier this week with a significant tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and can now be ruled out through the first couple months of the 2015 season. The 21-year-old right-hander has been a dominant force in his young career, boasting a 2.25 ERA and 10.13 K/9 in 224 1/3 total major league innings. He'll be missed while he's gone.

Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill confirmed Tuesday that Jose Fernandez has a "significant" tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. It's what has been reported by others previously, but this is the first time the Marlins have confirmed the unfortunate news. Hill said that Fernandez is still weighing whether to undergo Tommy John surgery, but there's little doubt that that's the direction this is headed. Fernandez is expected to miss 12-18 months.

Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Jose Fernandez (elbow) is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery by the end of the week. We're pretty much just waiting on official word from the Marlins at this point, as every media outlet is reporting that season-ending surgery is in the offing for the young right-hander. Fernandez will be sidelined for the next 12-15 months. Obviously, it's rotten news for the 21-year-old, the Marlins and baseball as a whole.
