Loney's roster spot could be in jeopardy with the Rays potentially keeping three catchers to start the season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
With manager Kevin Cash floating the possibility of three catchers--presumably offseason acquisition Hank Conger, Curt Casali and Rene Rivera--making the Opening Day roster, Loney could find himself the odd man out. The veteran has hit .281 with no home runs and an RBI over 32 spring at-bats, and is entering the final year of a three-year, $21 million dollar contract.

Loney went 2-for-2 with a single and two-run homer in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over the Cuban National Team.
EDGE Analysis
The 31-year-old first baseman crushed a fourth-inning two-run shot off southpaw Livan Moinelo to give the Rays a 3-0 lead in the historic exhibition. Loney is slated to open the season as the everyday first baseman, after finger and oblique injuries limited him to 361 at-bats in 2015. When healthy, Loney has proven capable of contributing with his bat in a number of areas, although his numbers are typically of the solid-yet-unspectacular variety. The veteran has topped out at 90 RBI twice in his career, while posting a high-water mark of 15 home runs in a season.

Loney is not in the lineup Friday, Roger Mooney of The Tampa Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
This really shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering Loney has been resting against lefties starters in recent weeks. Richie Shaffer will get the start instead and hit eighth in the batting order.

Loney is out of the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Loney has been riding the pine more frequently against left-handed starters, so it's no surprise he'll sit Sunday with southpaw Mark Buehrle twirling for the Jays. Richie Shaffer gets the starting nod at first base.

Loney is not in the lineup Monday against the Yankees, Steve Carney of WDAE 620 AM reports.
EDGE Analysis
With lefty CC Sabathia set to take the mound for the Yankees, the left-handed hitting Loney will get the day off. Richie Shaffer will get the start at first base in his stead and bat seventh against the southpaw.

Loney is out of the lineup Sunday against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Rays have been resting Loney more frequently against lefty pitching of late, and that will remain the case Sunday with southpaw Rich Hill on the mound for Boston. Richie Shaffer enters the lineup at first base.

Loney is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Tigers.
EDGE Analysis
Loney will get the day off with left-hander Matt Boyd on the hill for the Rays, though he was in Monday's lineup against another lefty, Detroit's Randy Wolf. The 31-year-old has struck out 11 times in 58 at-bats against left-handed pitchers, compared to only 16 strikeouts in 231 at-bats versus righties.

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman James Loney has been suspended one game for making contact with an umpire during Saturday's game. Loney was ejected Saturday for arguing balls and strikes and bumped the chest of the home plate umpire during the ensuing altercation, but he has appealed the suspension and should be in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins.

Loney (finger) is in the lineup, batting fourth and starting at first base, for Friday's game against the Yankees, MLB.com's Bill Chastain reports. Loney, who went 4-for-11 during a brief rehab assignment with High-A Charlotte, will return to a tough matchup against Masahiro Tanaka. Loney figures to be a regular presence in the cleanup spot when the Rays face right-handers, and he'll also be in the lineup more often than not against lefties.
