Ross will start at catcher Sunday night against the Cardinals. Ross and Cubs' Opening Day starter Jon Lester were teammates back in Boston, so there's likely a certain degree of established comfort here. Look for Miguel Montero to serve as the primary catcher in Chicago once the season gets into rhythm.

Ross went 3-for-6 and drove in two runs in a victory over the Rockies on Saturday. Ross has just 26 at-bats in the Cactus League this year, and he shouldn't expect more over the season's first month, especially if Welington Castillo isn't there. If you have a need for an every-five-days catcher on your roster, Ross is your man.

With Jon Lester expected to start for the Cubs on Opening Night, Ross might be starting in the opener as well. It's widely understood that Ross was signed to be Lester's personal catcher, so expect him to get the start on Opening Night, rather than Miguel Montero. He's still the backup, and if the Cubs can't deal Welington Castillo, it's doubtful Ross will ever play unless he's catching for Lester.

Ross signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the Cubs on Friday, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports. A report earlier in the day had Ross headed to San Diego, but it turns out the free agent will wind up in Chicago instead. It's not exactly clear how he will be used, but he served as Jon Lester's personal catcher last season, and there's a decent chance he will do so again in 2015.

Ross agreed to a contract with the Padres on Friday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports. Ross will head to San Diego to presumably take over the backup catcher duties behind Derek Norris. He has not finished with more than 28 RBI in a season since 2007, so don't expect him to be much of a fantasy factor.

Ross (foot) went 1-for-4 with an RBI in his return to the lineup Wednesday. Christian Vasquez figures to see the bulk of the playing time down the stretch, especially since the Red Sox have little reason to push Ross and potentially cause the injury that landed him on the disabled list to flare up again.

Ross (heel) will be activated from the disabled list Wednesday, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports. During Ross' absence, Christian Vasquez has assumed everyday catching duties, which will likely contain the veteran backstop to an appearance or two per week. The role won't be different from what Ross held prior to his placement on the DL.

Ross (heel) may be activated from the DL on Tuesday. On Monday, Ross will partake in a typical pregame routine, which includes batting practice, a bullpen session, and running. If he emerges from the events unscathed, expect him to be activated from the disabled list.

Ross (heel) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Monday or Tuesday, the Boston Globe reports. Ross has elected not to go out on a rehab assignment. His return will likely end Dan Butler's stay in Boston.

Ross (heel) may not require a rehab assignment, the Boston Globe reports. "I might just jump back in," Ross said. "We're kind of playing it by ear. We'll see if I need at-bats, but my BPs have felt good. We're kind of on the fence about that." Ross took swings for the fourth straight day and caught a bullpen session for the second day in a row Friday.
