Straily signed a split contract with the Cubs on Thursday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
Straily, 35, spent some time at Triple-A Reno in the Diamondbacks organization in 2022 but aside from that has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization since 2020. He last appeared in the majors in 2019 with the Orioles. Straily presumably will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa, although he could initially go to extended spring training or a lower affiliate.

The Diamondbacks granted Straily his release from his minor-league deal Monday, allowing him to sign a one-year, $400,000 contract with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports.
EDGE Analysis
After failing to win a spot on the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster, Straily had toiled all season at Triple-A Reno, with whom he produced a 6.35 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 53:30 K:BB in 62.1 innings. Since a call-up to the majors wasn't imminent, Straily will instead head to Korea for the second time in his career, and he'll be well-compensated for the remaining three months of the season. The 33-year-old previously led the KBO circuit in strikeouts while pitching for the Giants in 2020.

Straily was reassigned to minor-league camp Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Straily joined the Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee in February following a successful two-year stint in Korea, but he failed to make his case for a roster spot this spring. His 8.68 ERA in 9.1 Cactus League innings was quite poor, though it did at least come with 12 strikeouts against just three walks. He'll head to the minors to try to prove himself worthy of his first major-league opportunity since 2019.

Straily allowed seven runs on nine hits (two home runs) while striking out three over three innings in Saturday's spring game against the Angels.
EDGE Analysis
Straily is bidding to be the Diamondbacks' fifth starter, but his debut in an Arizona uniform did not go well. "I came in with the mind-set that I'm going to fill up the strike zone - and as (pitching coach) Brent (Strom) pointed out to me, I did that a little too well," Straily told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "A lot of first-pitch hits, a lot of first-pitch hacking." Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Straily has pitched better on the backfields, but he'll need to make adjustments in terms of pitch mix.

Straily signed a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to spring training with Arizona on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Straily spent the last two seasons in the KBO while serving as a starting pitcher for the Lotte Giants. Across 360.1 total innings in that span, Straily maintained a 3.22 ERA with 369 strikeouts across 360.1 innings. In an interview earlier this winter, Straily specifically mentioned using technology such as Rapsodo to improve his pitches while in the KBO. The last time Straily pitched in the major leagues, he posted a 9.82 ERA across 47.2 innings as a member of the Orioles. However, if he can carry over his recent success, Straily should have the chance to earn a spot with the big-league team given the current state of the Diamondbacks' rotation.

Straily has signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract to remain with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Straily had a strong first season in the KBO, going 15-4 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 205 strikeouts in 194.2 innings for the Giants. His return to the KBO is in large part likely a sign of the uncertainty about the length and timing of the 2021 MLB season.

Straily signed a contract with the Lotte Giants of the KBO on Friday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
Straily struggled mightily with the Orioles a season ago, accruing a 9.82 ERA and 1.99 WHIP with a 33:22 K:BB over 47.2 frames. He'll look to resurrect his career overseas, and could return to Major League Baseball if he finds success in Korea.

Straily elected free agency Tuesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran has parts of eight big-league seasons under his belt but will almost certainly be looking for a minor-league deal this winter. In 47.2 innings for the Orioles last season, he struggled to a 9.82 ERA while striking out just 14.0 percent of opposing batters.

Straily was traded from the Orioles to the Phillies on Wednesday in exchange for cash, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
It's been a rough year for Straily, who owns a brutal 9.82 ERA, 1.99 WHIP and 33:22 K:BB in 47.2 innings this season. He'll report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he'll serve as organizational pitching depth.

Straily accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The decision allows Straily to keep the remainder of his major-league contract but prevents him from seeking opportunities elsewhere. It's not clear that any opportunities were likely to come after he recorded a 9.82 ERA in 47.2 innings for the Orioles to start the season.
