The Angels made the signing of Doug Fister official on Saturday, which led to Bailey being moved to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot. Bailey recently suffered a setback during a bullpen session and is being brought along slowly as a result. As it stands, the earliest Bailey will be able to return is in mid-June, but until he's able to string together bullpen sessions with no discomfort, it's difficult to pinpoint when he'll be able to rejoin the Angels.

Although it's good news that examinations found nothing new, Bailey has yet to provide owners with any optimism that he can return to the majors quickly, much less produce in the Angels bullpen. Expect him to require at least another two weeks before he reaches the majors, with more likely given his struggles thus far.

Look for Jose Alvarez and Blake Parker to continue splitting setup man duties for a couple more weeks.

Bailey has been slowly working his way back after landing on the 10-day DL with shoulder inflammation earlier in April. He tossed out to 120 feet without an issue, clearing the way for him to throw a bullpen "early, middle next week." If all goes well, the 32-year-old will be one step closer to rejoining the Angels bullpen, where he is set to play a prominent role in 2017.

Bailey had pitched three innings this season, earning two wins. The former All-Star had seen his numbers drop off significantly after a successful first three years or so in the majors, finishing with a 5.36 ERA in 43.2 innings last season. It appeared Bailey was positioning himself to be the setup man in the Angels' bullpen before the injury. The Angels called up right-hander Daniel Wright to take his spot on the roster.

Bailey (1-0) tossed a clean inning and picked up the win in Tuesday's comeback win over the Athletics.

EDGE Analysis

Manager Mike Scioscia said that he would deploy a committee approach to save situations, but Bailey was brought out in the eighth inning when the Angels were down by two runs, which isn't traditionally how closers are used. The veteran pitcher rewarded those who grabbed him for save chances with a vulture win, but it appears Bailey is 1B to Cam Bedrosian's 1A (who picked up the save Tuesday).

The Angels will use a closer committee to open the season, likely consisting of Cam Bedrosian and Bailey, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.

EDGE Analysis

Given a mediocre spring season from Bailey and a fantastic 2016 (1.12 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) from Bedrosian, it was expected that Bedrosian would be the clear number one in the Angels bullpen with Huston Street injured to open 2017. Mike Scioscia is insisting he will use a committee approach to open the campaign, but considering how bad Bailey has been of late -- he has posted an ERA over 5.00 in three of the past four seasons -- chances are Bedrosian will assert himself in the closer's role at some point. That said, anybody who gets save chances is worthy of watching in fantasy, and Bailey just might have some coming his way this April given Scioscia's comments.

With a 5.40 ERA through seven spring games, Bailey remains the dark horse in the race to begin the year as the Angels' closer.

With Huston Street (back) going down to injury early in March, Bailey was expected to compete with Cam Bedrosian for ninth-inning duties to begin the year. While the former has had experience closing out games in the past, the latter has a more dominant arsenal and has also outperformed the 32-year-old Bailey this spring. Barring any injuries or unforeseen shake ups, the veteran is expected to begin the year as the team's primary setup man.

Bailey was ineffective Monday, surrendering four runs on a hit and three walks over two-thirds of an inning.

EDGE Analysis

Talk about poor timing. Huston Street's (arm) status for Opening Day is strongly in doubt and the Angels' closer role is looking like a two-man battle between Cam Bedrosian (groin) and Bailey. Needless to say, this ugly outing is a huge step backwards for the veteran reliever. Bedrosian appears to be fully recovered from a minor groin injury that held him out of games this spring, and he will likely make his spring training debut later this week. Health issues aside, Bedrosian is considered the more dominant pitcher, making Bailey the underdog in this positional battle.

Bailey made his 2017 Cactus League debut Friday, throwing a scoreless inning while walking one and striking out two in a win over the Brewers.

EDGE Analysis

Huston Street (forearm) was the front-runner to land the Angels' closing job to start the year, but the injury he suffered in Friday's game puts his status for Opening Day in question. If he is not able to go, Bailey -- initially considered the dark horse in the race -- gets a significant boost in his chances of becoming closer. Cam Bedrosian was viewed as the biggest threat to taking Street's role away this spring, but if the latter is unable to compete, then Bailey steps into the role of main competition with Bedrosian sliding up to favorite. How both players perform this spring could dictate who gets first crack at saves for the Angels.
