Chen (elbow) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Monday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Chen will rejoin the big club for the first time since early May after a partially torn UCL derailed his season. The lefty was able to get in three rehab appearances in the minors over the past two weeks prior to his activation, but because he never tossed more than two innings in any of those outings, the Marlins won't turn to him as a rotation option. Instead, Chen is expected to work out of the bullpen the rest of the season, likely taking on low-leverage duties initially before perhaps working his way up the depth chart.

Chen (elbow) is expected to be deployed as a reliever when he's activated from the 10-day disabled list later in September, FOX Sports Florida reports.
EDGE Analysis
Since initiating a rehab assignment Aug. 25, Chen has made three appearances with two affiliates, but hasn't covered more than two innings in any outing. With time running out on the season, it doesn't look like Chen will have an opportunity to build up his arm enough to make starts, so the Marlins seem inclined to ease him back into action out of the bullpen once he's deemed ready to return from the DL. When that happens, it will mark Chen's first career relief appearances, as all 144 of the 32-year-old's MLB outings have come as a starter.

Chen (elbow) is expected to cover two innings in a rehab start with High-A Jupiter on Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Chen, who has been on the disabled list since early May with a partially torn UCL, previously made a pair of one-inning rehab appearances in the past week, so his advancement to a two-inning outing amounts to some incremental progress. That being said, until Chen is able to cover about five innings or 80 or so pitches during his rehab assignment, the Marlins probably won't consider activating him from the 10-day disabled list and slotting him back into the big-league rotation. It could be another week or longer before Chen is able to approach that workload.

Chen (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with the Gulf Coast League Marlins, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
EDGE Analysis
It's been a long, slow road back for Chen, but he's now ready to return to a competitive setting for the first time in nearly four months. The lefty pitched effectively with a slight UCL tear early in the year, but fatigue eventually set in, and there was a setback with the elbow along the way. He recently built up to 30 pitches in a simulated game.

Chen (elbow) threw 30 pitches in a simulated game Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
A return before the end of the season is possible for Chen, who hasn't pitched in a game since May 1. Chen has player options for the next three seasons that he can exercise after the 2017 World Series, which total $52 million, so the Marlins will likely continue to err on the side of caution with his recovery with the hope that he'll be able to effectively take the ball every fifth day in the years to come.

Chen (elbow) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session Wednesday, Tim Healey of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Chen reporting no pain in his left elbow following a pair of bullpen sessions last week, the Marlins will clear him to take another step forward in the rehab process by facing hitters. Since Chen hasn't pitched in a game since May 1, he'll likely be asked to throw batting practice or a simulated game at least once more after Wednesday's session before the Marlins send him out on a rehab assignment. The Marlins expect Chen to return from the disabled list before the season is out, but his activation isn't expected to come until September.

Chen (elbow) has an encouraging bullpen session Wednesday that included some breaking pitches, and the Marlins haven't ruled out getting him back before the end of the season, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The lefty says he's throwing pain-free right now, and the team plan on having him work a live batting practice next week after another bullpen session Saturday. Chen may not have time to build up his arm strength and reclaim a spot in the rotation before the end of the year, but if he continues to progress well in his rehab he could find himself in a long relief role in September.

Chen (elbow) was slated to throw a fastball-only bullpen session Monday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
EDGE Analysis
The lefty is making incremental progress in his throwing program -- he was cleared to resume throwing a little over a month ago -- but he remains without a clear return timetable. Chen's next step will be to begin incorporating some of his secondary pitches while throwing off a mound. He was treated with a platelet-rich plasma injection in late May in an effort to expedite his return following a setback with the partially torn UCL.

Chen (elbow) is scheduled to resume throwing Wednesday, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
Chen hasn't picked up a throwing program since suffering a setback near the end of May that resulted in him getting a platelet-rich plasma injection. He still remains without a timetable for his return, though he's likely still a ways away seeing as he hasn't resumed throwing yet and has been sidelined since the beginning of May. A firmer return date should start to materialize as he begins to ramp up his throwing intensity.

Chen (elbow) received a platelet-rich plasma injection but there is still no timetable for his return, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Marlins figure to be patient with Chen as the PRP injection takes effect before zeroing in on a firmer timetable for his return. Chen is dealing with a partial UCL tear in his pitching elbow, but a recent MRI after a setback did not reveal any additional damage to the area. Look for a further update on Chen's outlook in the coming days.
