Marcum was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. After being designated for assignment Tuesday, Marcum cleared waivers and will report to the Triple-A club. He allowed just one run in five innings of relief work in his lone appearance this season and could be in line for a promotion at some point for a spot start or to fill in for an injury in the big league rotation.

Marcum was designated for assignment Tuesday, MLB.com reports. With Yan Gomes (knee) expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, the Indians need a spot on the 40-man roster for Brett Hayes. Marcum fared well in his only appearance for Cleveland, holding the Tigers to one run over five innings of mop-up work. If he isn't claimed by another team, the 33-year-old righty could eventually be an option to serve as an injury replacement in the big-league rotation.

Marcum allowed a run on three hits and three walks in a five-inning relief appearance Sunday. Marcum pitched well in his first appearance since being recalled from Triple-A over the weekend but figures to remain in a relief role despite the early season wobbles from starters Zach McAllister and J House.

Marcum had his contract purchased and will be on the 40-man roster for the Indians. Marcum did not appear in a game for AAA Columbus. In spring training, he went 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA. He started one game and appeared in two others. He spent the 2013 rehabbing from shoulder surgery.

Marcum was informed Tuesday that he will not make the Opening Day roster, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports. He will be able to remain in camp with the big league team for the rest of spring training and will then presumably report to Triple-A and serve as starting pitching depth.

Marcum was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday in order to be with his wife for the birth of his child. Marcum figures to miss a couple of days but this shouldn't adversely affect his chances at winning a spot at the back of the Cleveland rotation.

Marcum tossed three shutout innings against the Royals on Monday. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Marcum is a darkhorse candidate to open the season as a member of the starting rotation but an opt out clause in his contract might tilt things in his favor if the Indians like what they see this spring. T.J. House appears to have the inside track on the fourth spot which would leave Marcum fighting with Danny Salazar, Zach McAllister, Josh Tomlin and Bruce Chen for the last spot.

Marcum tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his first appearance of the spring Friday. Marcum's looking to emerge from a crowded pack and win the fifth starter spot this spring after missing all of last year rehabbing from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Marcum, who missed all of last year rehabbing from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery, is back to full health and ready to compete for a rotation spot this spring, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. "I'm 100 percent. Everything is full go," he said. "I have a full camp, just like everyone else here. We'll see what happens." Marcum's going to face an uphill battle to crack the Indians starting rotation but does have an opt-out clause if he doesn't break camp with the Indians. He'll be competing with Danny Salazar, Josh Tomlin, TJ House, Bruce Chen and Zach McAllister for the fifth spot in the Cleveland rotation.
