The Rangers had designated Ruggiano for assignment two days earlier in order to make roster room for starting pitcher A.J. Griffin. After finding no suitors interested in either trading for Ruggiano or claiming him off waivers, the Rangers will be able to keep the outfielder in their organization as Triple-A depth.

Ruggiano was actually playing well after joining the Dodgers, slashing .291/.350/.618 in 21 games following a trade on the last day of August, but opted for free agency rather than accepting a demotion to Triple-A. Though the 33-year-old ended the season strong, he'll likely start the season as an extra outfielder or a depth piece wherever he lands.

Ruggiano was sent outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City Thursday.

Ruggiano was a terrific addition for the Dodgers near the end of the season as the 33-year-old slashed a .291/.350/.618 in 55 at-bats, mainly against left-handed pitching. He'll likely serve as organizational depth in the outfield if he chooses to accept his demotion, but he will more than likely opt to become a free agent this offseason instead.

Ruggiano went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a steal and a run scored in a 6-2 win over Pittsburgh on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

Ruggiano has been ridiculous since being acquired from the Mariners, as he is hitting .333 with three homers, four doubles, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in seven starts and 11 total appearances. He is also suddenly fantasy relevant, as he bats atop one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball against southpaws.
