Weaver made his first Cactus League appearance in a San Diego uniform Monday. He tossed two innings of one-run ball while allowing four hits and striking out one in a win over the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
The Padres brought Weaver in to shore up a poor rotation. The move to pitcher-friendly Petco Park improves his prospects slightly, but the soft-tossing righty doesn't have enough velocity (84.0 mph average fastball velocity in 2016) to generate enough strikeouts (5.2 K/9 in 2016). At this point of his career, Weaver relies on keeping opposing hitters off-balance by relying on his off-speed pitches (66.8 percent) more than his diminishing fastball (33.2 percent). He has the moxie to churn out some quality starts this year, but outside of the deepest formats, he is simply too risky to be relied upon outside of spot starts.

Weaver says he will make his spring debut Monday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver will finally get his chance on the mound this spring after signing a one-year deal with the Padres last month. The veteran southpaw has been increasing his pitching activity lately as he competes for a spot in the starting rotation. Weaver has spent the first 11 years of his career with the Angels, but is coming off a disappointing season in which he posted a 5.06 ERA and allowed 37 home runs in 31 starts.

Weaver faced live batters Thursday and could make his spring training debut next week, MLB.com's AJ Cassavell reports.
EDGE Analysis
The recently signed Weaver has been ramping up his activity since reporting during the first week of spring training. He figures to compete for one of the final spots in the Padres' rotation once he's ready for game action, which could be as soon as next week. The former ace of the Angels is coming off his worst professional season in which he posted a 5.06 ERA and had one of the lowest average fastball velocities in baseball, clocking in at 83.0 miles per hour.

Weaver will sign a one-year deal with the Padres on Monday, pending a physical, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
EDGE Analysis
He spent the first 11 years of his career with the Angels, where he was a three-time All-Star selection and compiled a 3.55 career ERA. Weaver's production has dropped off significantly in the past two seasons, however, and he posted a career-worst 5.06 ERA in 31 starts last year. Even worse, he gave up a league-leading 37 home runs. Nonetheless, the Padres gain a workhorse in Weaver; the veteran has started at least 24 games in each of his last 10 seasons and is averaging 214 innings per year. The right-hander should get plenty of opportunities, but don't expect any fantasy magic from the veteran.

Weaver (back) will not start Sunday against the Astros, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander was holding out hope that he could start the season finale but Weaver said Saturday that his back "is not responding as much as it did before." A replacement was not immediately named but Ricky Nolasco would be an option on normal rest. While Weaver's tenure with the Angels is likely over, he said he is not retiring.

Weaver (back) is still considered questionable for Sunday's start, the Orange County Register reports.
EDGE Analysis
Back tightness forced Weaver off the mound Monday after 71 pitches. While he said immediately following that game that he expected to start the season finale, Weaver seemed a little less certain Friday, saying his status hinged on how he felt coming out of his bullpen session. Jhoulys Chacin is considered the top candidate to fill in should Weaver get scratched.

Weaver exited Monday's start after five innings with tightness in his lower back.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver only tossed 71 pitches and left the game with a 1-0 lead. At this time the Angels haven't divulged whether or not Weaver will be able to make his last projected start of the season.

Weaver (12-12) was the winning pitcher in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over Texas, surrendering four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six.
EDGE Analysis
The Angels offense picked up the veteran right-hander in his 30th start of the season, making up for their starting pitcher's last outing, a quality start against the Blue Jays, when he pitched six innings of two-run ball. While Weaver's peripherals are eerily consistent with last season's campaign, albeit a slight statistical regression in 2016, the former Cy Young runner-up has collected five more wins for the club while sporting a 5.20 ERA.

Weaver allowed four runs on six hits over six innings en route to picking up his 12th win of the season Wednesday against the Rangers. He struck out six and walked two in the contest.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver allowed a home run for the ninth consecutive start, but the veteran has thrown the ball well in his last three outings, surrendering eight runs and striking out 18 batters over 18.2 innings. Weaver's below average strikeout rate, 35 percent hard contact rate and penchant for allowing home runs makes it difficult to trust him on a regular basis, but he could suffice as a desperation play for teams scouring the wire during championship week.

Weaver fell to 11-12 after allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in six innings during Friday's 5-0 loss to the Blue Jays.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver delivered his second straight quality start and third in his last four outings, but didn't get any run support. Both of the runs he allowed scored on Troy Tulowitzki's homer, which marked the eighth straight start where Weaver's been taken deep. His 36 home runs allowed lead the American League, while his 202 hits allowed are most in the MLB. The 33-year-old has been pitching better lately, however, compiling a 3.77 ERA over his last five starts. He'll look to carry that momentum into Wednesday's challenging road date with the Rangers.
