Padres re-signed RHP Jason Marquis to a one-year, $3 million contract. It's a decent score for Marquis, whose career appeared to be in jeopardy after he opened 2012 with an 8.47 ERA through seven starts with the Twins. But he rebounded out in San Diego, like many pitchers before him, and should remain a decent option for the Padres in 2013.

According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Padres are close to re-signing right-hander Jason Marquis. Marquis had a decent 4.04 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 15 starts with San Diego before fracturing a bone in his left hand after getting struck by a comebacker in late August. He'll get a one-year contract from the Friars.

Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said the team has interest in re-signing Jason Marquis. "He's on the radar," said Byrnes. "The more we looked around, he's a guy we're talking about." Marquis' 2012 season ended prematurely in mid-August when he suffered a fractured left hand after being hit by a comebacker. He pitched pretty well in his time with the Padres, though, posting a 4.04 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 15 outings. He wouldn't be a bad guy to have around for depth, given that it should only take a minor league deal.

Jason Marquis has elected free agency. Marquis got off to a woeful start with the Twins this season, posting an 8.47 ERA over seven starts. But, he rebounded with 4.04 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 15 outings with the Padres before his season ended in mid-August due to a broken bone in his hand. The 34-year-old might have to settle for a minor league deal this winter.

Jason Marquis (wrist) threw a bullpen session Thursday. Marquis hasn't pitched since August 21 due to a broken bone in his left (non-throwing) hand. It's highly unlikely he'll return before the end of the season, but he's trying to keep his arm in shape. "He loves baseball," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He loves to throw. When he broke his hand, he wanted to keep throwing. He wanted his body clock to know he was pitching in September. I admire that." Marquis has a 4.04 ERA in 15 starts since joining the Padres and is due to hit free agency this offseason.

Jason Marquis (wrist) threw more than 50 pitches in a simulated game Saturday. Marquis' fractured left thumb still leaves him unable to catch balls thrown back to him, but he wants to keep his pitching arm in shape. The right-hander still wants to return late this season, though Padres manager Bud Black didn't sound optimistic about the possibility. "He wants to keep throwing," Black said. "He wants to keep his body throwing through the end of the season. He doesn't want to be shut down. He still has to get a (medical) clearance to pitch."

The Padres haven't ruled out Jason Marquis (wrist) returning this season. Manager Bud Black said he wouldn't be surprised if the Marquis made "at least" one more start, and believes he could return within his four to six weeks timetable. The Padres have not announced who will replace Marquis in the rotation Monday.

Jason Marquis was spotted with a soft cast on his left hand Wednesday. Marquis hurt the hand in his last start. X-rays came back negative, but a CAT scan showed "action," according to Padres manager Bud Black. It seems likely that the veteran right-hander will miss at least one start.

Jason Marquis tossed 6 1/3 innings of three-run ball to earn a win against the Mets Sunday. Marquis struck out five, walked one and gave up four hits. He now hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last six starts at Petco Park. But despite the strong outing, we'd be hesitant to roll out Marquis in Pittsburgh next weekend. He got rocked for seven earned in Cincy last Tuesday.

Jason Marquis was lit up by the Reds Tuesday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings. Marquis settled in during the middle innings after allowing six runs in the first three frames, but he served up a longball to Brandon Phillips in the seventh that proved to be the winning run. Though he has a decent 4.08 ERA and 1.35 WHIP since joining the Padres, Marquis remains a sketchy fantasy play away from Petco Park. He'll get the Mets at home this weekend.
