Jason Marquis limited the Braves to two runs on five hits over 7 2/3 innings in improving to 8-2 on Monday. Marquis wasn't exactly sharp, walking five and striking out four, but he's constructed a career out of playing with fire and praying the mound doesn't set ablaze. The veteran's smoke-and-mirrors approach is well suited for PETCO, but Marquis surprisingly has a better road than home ERA thus far. He'll take a nice 3.59 ERA and rough 1.42 WHIP and 50/43 K/BB rate (77 2/3 innings) into next week's date against the Snakes in San Diego.

Marquis struggled with his command (four walks) and gave up back-to-back two run innings, including a two-run homer to Eric Chavez. It ends a steak of five straight quality starts, but he managed to escape with a no-decision. Marquis has been an underrated signing for the Padres. He now has 6-2 record, 3.70 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 59 innings.

And that five-game winning streak? He posted a hideous 17/18 K/BB rate over 31 2/3 innings during that stretch. This house of cards is about to topple and you'd be wise to identify the sucker in your league to pay for Marquis' 6-2 record and 3.27 ERA before it does.

Jason Marquis pitched eight innings of five-hit ball and combined with Huston Street on a 1-0 shutout of the Marlins on Wednesday. A fine outing, even if it was against a Triple-A lineup. Marquis has won three straight starts and lowered his ERA to 3.48. Things are about to get more difficult with road starts against the Orioles and Diamondbacks and home outing against the Cardinals next on the schedule.
