Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Wednesday that Henry Rodriguez is dealing with a tender elbow. Not a good sign after Rodriguez had season-ending surgery last August to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. It was assumed that he would have a chance to win a spot in the bullpen this spring, but that could obviously change if the elbow continues to be an issue. The 25-year-old right-hander posted a 5.83 ERA and 31/22 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings last season and was 9-for-12 in save chances.

Nationals skipper Davey Johnson said Friday that he anticipates Henry Rodriguez having a role in the bullpen in 2013, provided that he is healthy and has a good spring training. Johnson noted that he sees Rodriguez pitching anywhere between the sixth and eighth innings. The 25-year-old fire-baller saved nine games for the Nationals in 2012, but poor command of the strike zone and elbow troubles derailed his season in the second half.

Henry Rodriguez (finger) is expected to make two or three more rehab appearances before rejoining the Nationals' bullpen. Rodriguez has two scoreless innings under his belt with Triple-A Syracuse, though he walked two batters during his most recent appearance on Thursday. Control issues were the major reason he was removed from the Nats' closer role and the hard-throwing right-hander figures to be used in lower-leverage situations upon his return.
