MUjica (hand) suffered a fractured thumb Thursday and will be placed on the disabled list, John Hickey of the Oakland Tribune reports. Mujica required stitches in his thumb in addition to suffering a fracture after taking a comebacker off his hand during Thursday's loss to Tampa Bay. The move to the DL is yet to be made official, but the losing Mujica thins out an Oakland bullpen that is already missing Sean Doolittle.

Mujica left Thursday's game after taking a comebacker off his pitching hand, John Hickey of the Oakland Tribune reports. Mujica made it through .2 innings before a Bobby Wilson comebacker struck him in the pitching hand. He was tended to by team trainers and left the field with his hand wrapped in a towel. There's no word yet on whether Mujica will be available to pitch Friday.

Mujica was called up to the Athletics on Monday. After being traded from the Red Sox for a player to be named later, Mujica should get his first chance to pitch for the A's against his former team during this series. As the setup man in Boston, he held a 4.61 ERA in 13.2 innings with only one clean appearance to his name in 11 appearances.

Mujica won't join the Athletics until they begin their homestand Monday against the Red Sox, John Hickey of the Oakland Tribune reports. Mujica, who was acquired Saturday, figures to make his A's debut at some point during the series against his former team. He served as one of Koji Uehara's primary setup men in Boston, but he may be relegated to lower-leverage duty initially during his time with Oakland.

Mujica was sent to the A's on Saturday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Red Sox had decided Mujica was expendable enough to designate him for assignment earlier this week, so this does not come as a surprise. The A's seem like a logical organization to give Mujica a shot, however he will likely be no closer to notching saves in Oakland than he was in Boston, as Tyler Clippard and Sean Doolittle (when healthy) stand ahead of him on the organizational depth chart. When he joins the team, Oakland will make a 25-man roster move to make him eligible. They moved Jarrod Parker (elbow) to the 60-day DL to make room for Mujica on the 40-man roster.

Mujica was designated for assignment Thursday, the Boston Globe's Alex Speier reports. He has a 4.61 ERA in 11 games and is giving up a .294/.345/.490 slash line to opposing hitters. The obvious fantasy case for Mujica was that he could be in line for saves if something happened to Koji Uehara, but that now seems very unlikely. Look for Matt Barnes to be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket as a corresponding move, and Barnes should slot into Mujica's role in the bullpen.

Mujica has allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks over 3.1 innings in his last three appearances. Mujica has not been good to start the 2015 season, blowing a save in early April as the fill-in closer while Koji Uehara (hamstring) was on the disabled list and now this recent run of futility. His ERA stands at 6.30 and he's allowed three homers in 10 innings. At this point, there's no word as to whether he'll remain the fill-in closer or keep his role as a setup option. Even if Mujica remains the fall-back option when Uehara isn't available, manager John Farrell recently told the Providence Journal that he will not hesitate to use Uehara on consecutive days. That will eat into Mujica's save opportunities.

Mujica picked up the win in Tuesday's night victory over Washington. He pitched a clean seventh inning, striking out two. Mujica is back in the role the Red Sox designed for him -- working the high-leverage seventh and eighth innings -- now that closer Koji Uehara is healthy and on the roster. Mujica was coming off two consecutive appearances in which he allowed homers.

Mujica allowed a solo homer, the second one allowed this season, in Sunday night's loss to the Yankees. Koji Uehara (hamstring), who is expected to be activated for Monday's home opener, can't get back to Boston soon enough. Mujica has not looked like a viable fill-in closing option the first week of the season. He's permitted two runs on four hits in three appearances.

Mujica served up a solo home run to Chase Headley in the ninth inning to blow a save and turn the game against the Yankees into a 19 inning marathon. He pitched one inning, giving up just the one hit while striking out one. The Red Sox announced that their normal closer Koji Uehara is heading out to Low-A Greenville on a rehab assignment Saturday so Mujica may not be long for the closer's role. He should soon return to his set-up role, but give the usage of pitchers during Friday's game, the bullpen could be short on Saturday.
