Reed gave up a three-run home run to Manny Pina in the eighth inning Sunday to cap a five-run Brewers rally and blow his first save of the season.

Only two of the runs were charged to Reed, but it was still a discouraging performance by the Mets new closer in the wake of Jeurys Familia's shoulder surgery considering the team was up 7-1 in the fifth inning and took a 9-6 lead into the eighth before losing 11-9. Reed now has a 3.86 ERA on the season thanks to a dreadful 2.4 HR/9, but his 0.96 WHIP and 23:0 K:BB through 18.2 innings suggest better days should be ahead once his luck on fly balls normalizes.

Reed should resume his role as closer for as long as Jeurys Familia (shoulder) is sidelined.

EDGE Analysis

Familia is flying to St. Louis to get tests done on an arterial clot in his right (throwing) shoulder, and he may require surgery. Reed, who went a perfect 4-for-4 in the saves role earlier in the year when Familia was suspended, should be an immediate pickup in all fantasy leagues. He has yet to walk a better this year and boasts a 3.00 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 18 innings.

General manager Sandy Alderson did not give closer Jeurys Familia a vote of confidence when asked about the bullpen on Saturday, Newsday's David Lennon reports. "As of right now do we have a closer? You tell me," Alderson said.

EDGE Analysis

Familia has allowed just one run in four innings since returning from his suspension, but he has also allowed 10 baserunners over that span (four hits, six walks), prompting Alderson's displeased comment regarding the state of the ninth inning. Reed was already worth owning in deeper mixed leagues for his ratios, strikeouts and the fact that he would be next in line if Familia got hurt, but now it seems like there is a legitimate chance that Reed could assume the role based on merit if Familia's performance does not improve.

Reed has done a good job in Jeurys Familia's place, but the Mets' typical closer will be back from his suspension Thursday. That'll presumably push Reed back to eighth-inning duties, but it's worth holding onto him for a few extra days just to make sure that's indeed manager Terry Collins' plan.

Fernando Salas will serve as the Mets' closer if needed Friday with Reed, Hansel Robles, and Josh Smoker all sitting out after tossing multiple innings in the series opener. Reed should reclaim his closer duties as soon as Saturday, but it's also worth noting that regular closer Jeurys Familia is nearing his return from suspension.

Reed worked around a single and struck a batter out in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Phillies for his third save.

The 28-year-old righty has done well as the Mets' closer in Jeurys Familia's absence, and he still has almost another week of ninth-inning duties ahead of him. Enjoy the saves while they last, but Reed will retain some fantasy value as a source of strikeouts and ratios even as a setup guy.

His owners can only hope that Reed gets the chance to finish off a few more games before he returns to eighth-inning duty.

This might be semi-disappointing for Reed's owners, as they had likely been hoping for something closer to the 30-game suspension Aroldis Chapman received last year. The Mets had 55 saves last season, and if they replicate that rate this year, Reed could end up with around five saves in his fill-in duty. He has value beyond the first 15 games of the season, however, as he would step in if Familia gets hurt or is unavailable for a save.
