Bauer has been vocal in the past about his desire to pitch on three days' rest, and manager David Bell will now grant him his wish as the Reds look to put their best pitchers on the mound over the final week of the regular season as they aim to clinch their first trip to the postseason since 2013. The right-hander has cleared 100 pitches in each of his four starts through September, but it's unclear if the Reds will exercise more caution with his workload due to the quicker turnaround. If Bauer fares well Wednesday and the Reds still need a win Sunday in Minnesota to earn a playoff spot, he could get the starting nod again on short rest or at least be available for some innings in relief.

Bauer (4-4) took the loss Saturday as the Reds fell 5-0 to the White Sox, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out five.

Bauer is scheduled to pitch Saturday against the White Sox. On ordinary rest, he'd pitch just once the rest of the season on the following Friday (as Thursday is a scheduled off day). In theory, he could pitch on short rest twice in the final week, throwing both Wednesday against the Brewers and Sunday against the Twins. Whether or not that makes sense for the Reds may depend largely on where they sit in the wild card race.

He lines up to face the Pirates on Monday in one game of the doubleheader.

This was a strong performance from Bauer, but he was let down by his defense, particularly in the fourth inning. A Joey Votto error to begin the frame was followed by a misplay in center by Brian Goodwin, leading to three unearned runs. Bauer is now 3-3 despite a 2.05 ERA and 61:13 K:BB in 44 innings. After dropping three consecutive decisions, he will look to get back in the win column next week in a road matchup against the Cubs.

Bauer was absolutely dominant in the seven-inning complete game. The right-hander only allowed multiple runners in the same inning once, in the fourth, and didn't allow them to do any damage. Bauer has a minuscule 0.68 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 41 strikeouts through 26.1 innings this season. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday in Milwaukee.

Bauer won't start Saturday since the Reds' next two contests were postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test on the team.
