The Blue Jays acquired Montero from the Cubs on Monday in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.
EDGE Analysis
According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Cubs are set to pick up the brunt of the approximately $7 million that's still owed Montero, who was designated for assignment last week after criticizing teammate Jake Arrieta's ability to slow down the run game. Montero likely wasn't helped by the Cubs' pitching staff in that regard, but his 1-for-31 success rate in nabbing would-be base stealers this season probably gave the Cubs some peace of mind in deciding to part ways with him. While Montero might not offer the sort of defensive prowess most teams value in their backup catchers, the veteran at least brings some offensive upside at the position, as his excellent .286/.366/.439 batting line this season attests. Russell Martin should still see the bulk of the duties behind the plate for Toronto, but if Montero can quickly establish rapport with his new team's pitching staff, he could pick up a few starts per week.

Montero was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.
EDGE Analysis
Coming on the heels of his critical comments about Jake Arrieta's play, Montero finds himself designated for assignment by the organization just a day later. The veteran had played well for the Cubs in his role this year, hitting .286/.366/.439 during 112 plate appearances as the second catcher on the depth chart. In his place, the team promoted Victor Caratini for his first major-league call-up prior to Wednesday's game.

Montero went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double during Sunday's win over Colorado.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran has settled into a predictable role with the Cubs this season. He's starting a couple of games a week and coming off the bench to pinch hit. Montero has made the most of his 90 plate appearances with a .300/.367/.488 slash line, but his four homers, eight RBI and 12 runs are hardly tilting the fantasy scales.

Montero went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Saturday's win over Boston.
EDGE Analysis
The backstop has been seeing semi-regular playing time and producing when in the lineup. Montero sports an impressive .394/.429/.606 slash line over 35 plate appearances. However, without more consistent at-bats, his counting stats aren't going to add up very fast.

Montero went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Brewers.
EDGE Analysis
The fourth-inning blast off Jeff Nelson was Montero's first of the season. He's been hitting well to begin the season, slashing .278/.316/.444 through six games, but with Willson Contreras locked into the starting role Montero's utility is limited to NL-only and deeper two-catcher formats.

Despite pairing with Kyle Hendricks most of spring training, Montero's starts during the regular season will depend more on the opposing pitcher, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
It was looking like Montero might be a personal catcher for Hendricks, but Cubs manager Joe Maddon dismissed that notion. "It benefits (Montero) and us to put him out there with the right pitcher," Maddon said. "Willson (Contreras) has Jon Lester, but otherwise it's wide open." Expect Contreras to get the bulk of the starts behind the plate for Chicago, with Montero spelling him on occasion.

Montero is impressing Cubs manager Joe Maddon this spring, but that doesn't mean he's going to get a bigger role once the regular season starts, the Chicago Sun-TImes reports.
EDGE Analysis
Maddon said he likes how Montero is moving and throwing this spring, but the veteran is still looking at just a start or two a week in place of Willson Contreras in 2017. "Willson is the guy, and Miggy knows that," Maddon said. Montero's only real path to fantasy relevance this season appears to be a Conteras injury.

Montero is out of the lineup for Game 6 of the NLCS.
EDGE Analysis
Montero has started just one game in the Championship Series and two games this postseason. He has one hit in eight postseason at-bats -- the pinch-hit, go-ahead grand slam in Game 1 against Los Angeles.

Montero (back) is not in the lineup for Game 1 of the NLCS.
EDGE Analysis
This comes as no surprise, as David Ross always catches Jon Lester. The fact that Montero was included on the NLCS roster suggests he'll get a start behind the dish at some point in the next couple games.

Montero (back) made the NLCS roster.
EDGE Analysis
His status for the NLCS was up in the air due to back pain, but the outlook is bright enough that he was included on the series roster. It's not clear yet whether he will be in the lineup for Game 1.
