With the Rockies receiving notice from Ian Desmond on Monday that he would sit out the 60-game season for personal reasons, the team quickly turned its focus to Kemp as a potential replacement. Though the 35-year-old Kemp is well removed from his prime years and no longer offers much value in the field, he could be a viable candidate to fill the designated-hitter role that will be available to the Rockies in 2020. In his last season as an everyday player in 2018 during his second stint with the Dodgers, Kemp slashed .290/.338/.481 with 21 home runs and 85 RBI in 506 plate appearances, earning his third All-Star nod along the way.

If Kemp makes the Marlins' 26-man roster, it will likely be in a reserve capacity, Steven Wine of the Associated Press reports. "Matt is in a great spot," manager Don Mattingly said. "He knows where he's at. That's the key for a guy like Matt, where you're not going to be playing six days a week, and understanding that's the role we're looking for."
