Gonzalez was released by Boston on Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez was designated for assignment by Boston on Friday, and he won't remain in the organization after he went unclaimed on waivers. The 32-year-old has plenty of defensive versatility, but he struggled to get things going at the plate this year, as he slashed .202/.281/.285 with two homers, 25 runs, 20 RBI and three stolen bases in 77 games with the Red Sox in 2021.

Gonzalez was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Friday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez's excellent 2017 season continues to fade further into the rearview mirror and looks more and more like an extreme outlier. He managed a .907 OPS that year but hasn't reached .760 in that category in any of his other nine big-league seasons. The veteran could find a new home elsewhere for the stretch run, as he's still nominally useful due to his ability to play nearly every position, but even utility players need to hit better than the .202/.281/.285 he's managed this season. Kyle Schwarber (groin) was activated off the injured list in a corresponding move.

Gonzalez started at second base and went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Friday's 12-4 loss to the Blue Jays.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez singled in the fifth inning, reached second base, and came around to score on an Enrique Hernandez single with a runner in scoring position, a rarity these days for the slumping Red Sox. Gonzalez has made three starts, all at second base, in the four games since coming off the injured list and is 2-for-12.

Gonzalez (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list and is batting seventh as the second baseman Tuesday in Detroit, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
A right hamstring strain has sidelined Gonzalez since July 16, at which point he was hitting .205/.286/.297 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 70 games this season. The utility man figures to get considerable playing time at first base, given Boston's lack of production of late at that position.

Gonzalez (hamstring) is expected to be activated Tuesday when the Red Sox open a three-game set in Detroit.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez is on a quick rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester. He started at first base Saturday and played seven innings after playing second base for five innings Friday. The Red Sox could use him for either position in the majors until Christian Arroyo (hamstring) and Kyle Schwarber (hamstring) are ready to go.

Gonzalez (hamstring) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Friday and went 1-for-2 with a base hit and a walk in the affiliate's 6-2 win over Buffalo.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez started at second base and played five innings in the field before getting the rest of the game off. The Red Sox will presumably want to see Gonzalez play a full nine-inning game in the minors before activating him, likely at some point within the next week. Once reinstated, Gonzalez could challenge for a strong-side platoon role at first base.

Manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that there's a "good chance" that Gonzalez (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment this weekend, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez was hopeful that he'd be able to begin a short rehab assignment this weekend, and he felt good after running the bases Tuesday. As a result, the 32-year-old is likely on track to return to game action in the minors this weekend. If all goes well, Gonzalez could rejoin the major-league club as early as next week.

Gonzalez (hamstring) is hoping to begin a short rehab assignment this weekend before possibly being activated from the 10-day injured list some time next week, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Red Sox haven't commented on whether Gonzalez's plan is actually realistic, and given that manager Alex Cora said the utility man wasn't close to returning as of Sunday, it wouldn't be at all surprising if it takes him longer to begin a rehab stint. Gonzalez's timeline should become more clear in the coming days, but in any scenario, he should have a good chance to be activated at some point in the earlier parts of August.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora suggested Sunday that Gonzalez's (hamstring) return from the injured list isn't imminent, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. "[Marwin is] progressing but I don't think it's going to be something short," Cora said of Gonzalez's stint on the IL. "Marwin's running right now [at] 60 percent."
EDGE Analysis
The fact that Gonzalez isn't being shut down from activity entirely offers some reassurance of his health, but he still looks like he's at least a week away from even beginning a rehab assignment. With two other utility men in Christian Arroyo (hamstring) and Danny Santana (groin) also on the shelf, Michael Chavis should have a decent amount of leash as Boston's top infielder off the bench.

Gonzalez (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
The move comes as no surprise, as manager Alex Cora said Sunday that the utility man would likely require a trip to the IL. The transaction is retroactive to Tuesday, making Gonzalez eligible to reinstated July 23. With that said, it seems very possible that the 32-year-old will require additional time to heal.
