Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to Toronto.
EDGE Analysis
It's been a slow start to the season for Gonzalez, who's now hitting .235 with four RBI in 51 at-bats. The utility player has been a staple in the bottom-third of Boston's order, but the team's depth will continue to pressure Gonzalez and, if his meager offensive output continues, threaten his role as an everyday player. The switch-hitter struggled considerably with Minnesota in 2020 and it's reasonable to question whether his days as a productive hitter are behind him.

Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a walk and a solo home run in Saturday's 7-4 win over the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez smacked the go-ahead hit when he kicked off a four-run eighth inning with his first home run -- and first extra-base hit -- of the season. His defensive versatility has been on display early, as Gonzalez has played five different positions through 12 games. However, he's batting just .216 (8-for-37).

Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a stolen base Thursday against the Orioles.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez returned to the starting lineup after missing out on a start for the first time this season Wednesday. He put together a strong performance, reaching base three times and also swiping his second bag of the season. Even so, it's been a relatively uninspiring start to the campaign for Gonzalez, as he has only four hits in 25 plate appearances with no extra-base knocks.

Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez doesn't have a direct path to an everyday gig at any one position, but his ability to play all over the infield and outfield has allowed him to hold down a quasi-full-time role so far this season. He started each of Boston's first five games, going 3-for-16 with two runs. Gonzalez will head to the bench while manager Alex Cora keeps Christian Vazquez's bat in the lineup at DH, but the utility man still looks like he'll still have a decent chance at picking up at least three or four starts per week moving forward.

Gonzalez started at first base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in Monday's 11-2 win over Tampa Bay.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez filled in for a struggling Bobby Dalbec, who's 0-for-10 with five strikeouts over the first three games. Gonzalez has started all four games to open the season, lining up at four different positions: left field, second base, third base and first base. Manager Alex Cora has history with Gonzalez from their days in Houston and will surely keep rolling him out across the field. Gonzalez has gone 3-for-11 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored to open the season.

Gonzalez started at second base and went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Orioles.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez started in left field Friday against the left-handed John Means, then shifted to second base against right-hander Matt Harvey. Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports Saturday's defensive alignment likely will be used often against righties. "It's just the nature of who we are and what we can do on a daily basis," manager Alex Cora said.

Gonzalez will serve as Boston's left fielder and bat seventh in the team's season opener Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Red Sox appear set to use a platoon in left field, with Gonzalez starting against southpaws and Franchy Cordero against righties. With the left-handed John Means slated to take the mound for Baltimore on Friday, Gonzalez will begin the campaign in the starting lineup.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that he's comfortable with Gonzalez serving as the team's everyday left fielder to begin the season if Franchy Cordero (COVID-19 injured list) isn't ready to play by Opening Day, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
After clearing the COVID-19 protocols earlier this week, Cordero is scheduled to put in a full workout Thursday, but he may not have enough time to get up to full speed before the April 1 season opener. As a result, Gonzalez looks like he might have a path to everyday at-bats early on during his first season in Boston, though he'll presumably move into more of a utility role once the Red Sox have their full complement of position players available.

Gonzalez will play all over the field this season, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez has played all over the diamond throughout his career, racking up starts at first, second and third base as well as both corner outfield spots. There's no clear opening on the Red Sox roster for him to play every day, making it little surprise that he will continue to shift around the field. Gonzalez will look to bounce back from one of his worst seasons, as he hit just .211/.286/.320 across 199 plate appearances with the Twins in 2020.

Gonzalez agreed to a one-year deal with the Red Sox on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gonzalez played a versatile role for the Twins in 2020, earning substantial playing time at first, second and third base as well as in right field. He should have the chance to fill a similar utility role in Boston, serving as insurance for the likes of Bobby Dalbec and newly-acquired Franchy Cordero. Since posting a 104 wRC+ in 2018 as a member of the Astros, Gonzalez has slipped to post marks of 93 and 66 in the past two seasons, respectively.
