Uehara (general soreness) will throw a bullpen session Saturday and is scheduled to pitch Monday, the Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Uehara has appeared in just two spring games and his recent soreness reinforces the team's decision to add closer Craig Kimbrel in the offseason. If healthy, Uehara will pitch the eighth inning leading up to Kimbrel.

Uehara is considered day-to-day due to general soreness, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Uehara isn't expected to need a DL stint just yet, but the fact that the 40-year-old needs some time after after just 1.2 innings of spring ball is a bit concerning. His fantasy value had already taken a hit when Craig Kimbrel was added to the mix in the Boston bullpen, and this recent development further hinders his chances of offering promising returns in the early going of 2016.

Uehara made his first spring training appearance Saturday, allowing a run on three hits while striking out two against the Marlins.
EDGE Analysis
Uehara, who hadn't pitched since last August when a line drive fractured his right wrist, was able to throw is splitter with action. The Red Sox will look to get him more appearances with the intent to add additional arm strength and action to his fastball. Once he's up to speed, Uehara is slated for an eighth-inning set up role, leading to closer Craig Kimbrel.

Uehara (wrist) said Tuesday that he is healthy, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
This was to be expected, given that the 41-year-old Uehara has been throwing since October. His age still raises concerns regarding durability, but with Craig Kimbrel now in the closer's role, the Red Sox should be able to use Uehara more judiciously. The former closer said he is fine with pitching the eighth inning instead of the ninth.

Uehara (wrist) is now expected to open 2016 in a setup role, with the Red Sox acquiring Craig Kimbrel from the Padres on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The Red Sox solidified the back end of the bullpen with the trade for Kimbrel, who will undoubtedly relegate Uehara to setup duties upon his arrival. While Uehara posted a 2.23 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 10.5 K/9 last season, he lost another mph on his fastball and will be 41 years old come Opening Day. Further, Uehara suffered a season-ending injury to his right wrist in August, though he's been throwing for more than a month and there has been no indication that he will miss the start of 2016.

Uehara (wrist) threw for the first time Sunday and again Monday since suffering a broken wrist, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Uehara has been on the disabled list since early August, but he's finally reached the point of playing light catch. He still has a long way to go, but the veteran should be available for the beginning of the 2016 season.

Uehara (wrist) was moved to the 60-day DL on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The Sox announced last month that Uehara's season is over, and Friday's move simply removes him from the 40-man roster. Boston claimed right-hander Roman Mendez off waivers, and he'll assume Uehara's roster spot.

Boston Red Sox closer Koji Uehara was ruled out for the rest of the season Monday after being diagnosed with a non-displaced distal radius fracture in his right wrist, according to WEEI. Uehara, who was struck on the wrist by a line drive during Friday's game, is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of next season. "The fact that there are persistent symptoms even after the reduction in swelling, we've got to check him thoroughly," Red Sox manager John Farrell said Sunday. Uehara was having a strong season, with 25 saves and a 2.23 ERA in 40 innings for a disappointing Red Sox team. He is under contract through the end of next season and is expected to retain his role as the closer upon his return. Newly acquired Jean Machi is expected to take over the closer duties.

The Boston Red Sox will put pitcher Koji Uehara on the disabled list due to a wrist injury Monday, according to the Boston Globe. The 40-year-old closer sustained the injury -- which may be a fracture -- when he was hit by a comebacker Friday, leaving Junichi Tazawa as the likely ninth-inning man in Boston. Uehara has excelled since coming to the major leagues from Japan prior to the 2009 season, with this year's 0.92 WHIP representing the sixth consecutive campaign in which he has posted a mark under 1.00. All in all, Uehara has closed 25 games in 27 opportunities while posting a 2-4 record, 2.23 ERA and 47 strikeouts with nine walks in 40.1 innings. If the injury does prove to be a fracture, it could potentially end Uehara's season, as the last-place Red Sox will have little reason to rush him back to the field.
