Siegrist has been out of action since June 23 due to a cervical spine sprain, so retaking the mound was a major step in the right direction. He's scheduled to throw another midweek bullpen session, and if all goes well, will be sent on a rehab assignment.

Siegrist (back) recently received a cortisone injection to alleviate the discomfort of his cervical strain and is expected to resume throwing this weekend, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

The left-handed reliever is eligible to come off the disabled list on Monday, although it remains to be seen if he'll be activated immediately. Siegrist has struggled with consistency this season, and the team has already been informed by his doctors that he's likely to experience lingering soreness due to the fact that his condition is chronic.

Siegrist was the pitcher of record for the Cardinals when they exploded for seven runs in the top of the 11th, giving him his first win of 2016. The 27-year-old southpaw bounced back nicely after giving up an earned run in two of his previous three appearances, but he still carries a 4.44 ERA and 1.52 WHIP that have plenty of room for improvement.

Siegrist fired a scoreless eighth inning in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Dodgers, issuing a walk and striking out the side.

EDGE Analysis

Siegrist mowed through Brett Eibner, Cody Bellinger and Yasmani Grandal while working around a one-out walk to Logan Forsythe. The 27-year-old southpaw remains a heavily-used component of the Cardinals bullpen, but he's also given up multiple earned runs on three occasions despite pitching no more than 1.1 innings in any appearance. On the positive side, he's turned in a much better May than April, lowering his ERA from 7.56 to 5.03 this month.

Siegrist (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits over 1.1 innings during Saturday's extra-innings loss to San Francisco.

EDGE Analysis

Siegrist had strung together 9.1 scoreless innings over 11 appearances while striking out 11 batters leading into Saturday's game, but the rough outing has his ERA and WHIP up to 5.29 and 1.71, respectively. Expect the odd poor showing, but more often than not, Siegrist is a solid asset out of the bullpen for the Cardinals.

Siegrist notched his third hold of the season in Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Marlins, pitching a scoreless inning and recording two strikeouts.

EDGE Analysis

The 27-year-old lefty now has seven straight scoreless outings and has done an excellent job of curtailing some early control issues in the process. Siegrist notably handed out at least one free pass in six of his first seven appearances of the season but has only issued one walk since that point. He now has three holds and one save to his credit and has successfully lowered his ERA from 9.95 to 4.73 during his current streak.

Siegrist struck out one in a clean inning of work to record his first save of the season in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Braves in extra innings.

EDGE Analysis

With the club's top bullpen arms utilized earlier in the contest, Siegrist was called upon to close things out with a two-run lead in the 14th inning, retiring the side on 15 pitches in order to do so. Siegrist has fired six straight scoreless innings after a dreadful start to the season, but with Seung-Hwan Oh and Trevor Rosenthal still in the fold, his save opportunities will be few and far between.
