Rangers purchased the contract of C/1B J.P. Arencibia from Triple-A Round Rock. Arencibia hit just .133/.182/.233 over 66 plate appearances with the Rangers earlier this season, but now he's getting another chance. The difference this time is that he is expected to see most of his playing time at first base now that Carlos Pena has been designated for assignment. The 28-year-old appeared in 20 games there during his time with Triple-A Round rock.

Rangers sent C J.P. Arencibia outright to Triple-A Round Rock. Arencibia is now off the Rangers' 40-man roster. He was Texas' starting catcher on Opening Day because of Geovany Soto's knee injury but batted just .133/.182/.233 over 66 plate appearances and might not make it back to Arlington this season. A waste of $1.8 million.

Rangers optioned C J.P. Arencibia to Triple-A Round Rock. Arencibia was batting just .133/.182/.233 with 15 strikeouts in 20 games this season for the Rangers. Texas made a $1.8 million mistake on him in December.

J.P. Arencibia went 0-for-2, grounded into a double play and committed his second error of the year before being remove for a pinch-hitter Monday against the Mariners. The Rangers shouldn't have signed Arencibia over the winter, they shouldn't have carried him after his awful spring (even with Geovany Soto hurt) and they shouldn't continue to keep him around now. Just admit the mistake and move on.

J.P. Arencibia went 0-for-3 and had a passed ball Monday against the Red Sox. Arencibia isn't one of those catchers who makes up for his poor hitting with strong defense, and all things factored in, he rates as one of the game's very worst players over the last year. He's off to a 2-for-16 start with no RBI in five games this season, so the Rangers may want to start going to Robinson Chirinos more.

J.P. Arencibia will get the bulk of playing time at catcher for the Rangers in the early going. Geovany Soto is expected to miss around three months following knee surgery. Arencibia is not a good defensive catcher, but he swings a powerful bat and will be playing half of his games in a hitter-friendly park, so he could be a sneaky-good fantasy option.

J.P. Arencibia belted a grand slam on Sunday, powering the Rangers to a 14-8 victory over the White Sox. His sixth inning blast off Zach Putnam was the first ball Arencibia has knocked over the boards this spring. He's still hitting a paltry .156/.182/.344 through 32 at-bats to this point, and is being thoroughly out-played by Robinson Chirinos.

Rangers signed C J.P. Arencibia to a one-year, $1.8 million contract. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal passed along the contract details. The deal reportedly carries $300,000 in possible incentives. Arencibia was non-tendered by the Blue Jays last week after he batted just .194/.227/.365 this year, but the Rangers intend to have him back up Geovany Soto in 2014. He's unlikely to be relevant in mixed fantasy leagues.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers have reached an agreement with J.P. Arencibia. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported late Thursday that a deal was close, and now it appears a passed physical is all that it needs to be complete. The Blue Jays non-tendered the free-swinging Arencibia earlier this week, but he lands in a nice situation in Texas. He'll share time with Geovany Soto.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers and J.P. Arencibia are "progressing towards a deal." The particulars of the deal aren't yet known. The Rangers attempted to acquire Arencibia from the Blue Jays before the Jays non-tendered him earlier this week, so it's no surprise they didn't take much time to lock him up once he became a free agent. Arencibia is a one-trick pony who offers some power and little else, but he's not a bad guy to pair with Geovany Soto.
