Pirates activated LHP Joe Beimel from the 15-day disabled list. Beimel has been sidelined since late May with elbow inflammation, but he looked good during a rehab assignment and, more importantly, is healthy. He'll be used as the Pirates' primary late-inning left-hander.

"I'm pretty happy right now," he said. "No pain, the ball was coming out of my hand well. The pitches were crisp." The lefty will eventually move his rehab up to Double-A Altoona before rejoining the Pirates. He's probably a week or so away from returning.
