Jake Westbrook (elbow) didn't throw off a mound Tuesday as hoped. Westbrook threw for about 15 minutes on flat ground instead. The fact that he did throw indicates that it's probably not really a setback as much as the Cardinals just decided to wait a bit longer before having him throw from the bump. Westbrook is expected to miss at least a couple more starts.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) plans to resume throwing from a mound on Tuesday. It comes after he made 25 flat-ground throws from 60 feet on Sunday and 50 throws from 90 feet on Monday. Westbrook seems likely to need a rehab start or two before returning, but there's no word on when that might take place. He'll likely be back in early June if he can avoid a setback.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) played light catch on Sunday. Westbrook made 25 throws from 60 feet and said he felt good. The right-hander hasn't recovered as quickly as hoped from inflammation in his right elbow, requiring a pair of injections. He's expected to miss at least a couple more starts.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) isn't expected to return from the disabled list when he's first eligible. Westbrook was hoping to throw Friday, but he required another injection after an MRI revealed scar tissue around his right elbow. The Cardinals originally estimated that he would only miss two starts, but rookie John Gast figures to stick around for a little while longer.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) hopes to resume throwing on Friday. Westbrook landed on the DL over the weekend with inflammation in his throwing elbow, but the Cardinals are optimistic that it's something minor. He could return next week if all goes well.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Jake Westbrook (elbow) "should be ready" after two missed starts. "He's going to miss two starts, should be ready to go after that," Mozeliak said. "We don't think it's that big of a deal. It's just something that we didn't want to push it and didn't want it to become a big deal." Westbrook, who has been diagnosed with right elbow inflammation, has been given an injection in hopes of speeding along the healing process. John Gast will take his spot in the rotation.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told 101.1 ESPN's Brian Stull that Jake Westbrook's elbow injury isn't a big deal. Westbrook has had Tommy John surgery before, but Stull said Mozeliak was "emphatic" that the righty's current ailment isn't a Tommy John situation. The right-hander has been given an injection in his elbow in hopes of speeding along the healing process. John Gast is taking Westbrook's spot in the rotation starting Tuesday.

Cardinals placed RHP Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 9, with a right elbow inflammation. Westbrook has been given an injection in hopes that it will calm things down. It's not clear if he's already undergone an MRI or if that's yet to come. John Gast will take Westbrook's spot in the rotation starting Tuesday, but Carlos Martinez or Michael Wacha might be options eventually if the veteran is out for a while.

Jake Westbrook yielded four runs -- three earned -- in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Cubs. Westbrook allowed nine hits and struck out just one today. He still hasn't given up a homer in six starts this season, which explains much of the 1.62 ERA. Of course, that number will keep rising, but with two home starts against the Mets and Brewers next week, he still looks like a decent play in all formats.

Jake Westbrook pitched six innings and allowed one run Thursday in a victory over the Brewers. It's just the second time in five starts this season that Westbrook has allowed an earned run. The NL ERA leader still hasn't surrendered a homer in 33 2/3 innings.
