Arrieta was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb abrasion Tuesday, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Arrieta was lit up for seven runs in just 3.1 innings of work his last time out against the Reds. It's possible the thumb issue was at least partly to blame, as he'd pitched to a 2.57 ERA across his first five starts. The veteran will be eligible to return May 14, though it's not yet clear whether he's expected to do so. The Cubs have three off days before then, so they may be able to get by without an extra starter if his absence is brief, though they'll call on Keegan Thompson for the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Arrieta (3-3) took the loss Friday, coughing up seven runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 3.1 innings as the Cubs were downed 8-6 by the Reds. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander lasted only 67 pitches (42 strikes) before being chased from the game. Arrieta has lost three of his last four outings, but this was the first time in 2021 he failed to pitch at least five innings or allowed more than three runs, and he came into Friday having served up only two homers in 28 innings. Arrieta will take a 4.31 ERA and 28:12 K:BB into his next start.

Arrieta (3-2) allowed one run on two hits and three walks over six innings Sunday, striking out eight and taking a loss against Milwaukee.
EDGE Analysis
The Brewers jumped all over Arrieta in the first inning as the first four batters reached base. He managed to escape the no-out, bases-loaded jam after allowing just one run and cruised for the rest of his outing. However, he was outdueled by Brandon Woodruff and the Cubs were shut out with just four hits. Arrieta will carry a 2.57 ERA into Friday's road matchup with the Reds.

Arrieta (3-1) allowed just one run across five innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Mets. He gave up three hits and three walks while striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
The only damage against Arrieta came on a home run by J.D. Davis in the fifth inning, but the righty was otherwise able to strand five baserunners. The veteran has been solid in his return to Chicago, posting a 2.86 ERA through his first four starts. Arrieta will look to keep it going in his next scheduled appearance Sunday against the Brewers.

Arrieta (1-2) gave up three runs on four hits and a walk while fanning five across five innings Wednesday against the Brewers. He was tagged with the loss.
EDGE Analysis
Arrieta delivered a strong performance on the mound but was a victim of another woeful performance from the Cubs offense, as Chicago only went 4-for-32 as a team with two extra-base hits in the entire game. The veteran right-hander opened the season with back-to-back quality starts and has yet to allow more than three earned runs in an outing, posting a 3.18 ERA and a 14:5 K:BB across 17 innings.

Arrieta (2-0) allowed two runs on seven hits across six innings of work to secure the win Thursday against the Pirates. He walked three and struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Arrieta now has two quality starts and two wins through his first two appearances, as he's allowed just three earned runs across 12 innings of work. He only has nine strikeouts in that time, which is about par for the course for the veteran, who hasn't posted a K/9 of 9.0 or better since 2015. It also should be noted that both of Arrieta's starts have come against Pittsburgh, which isn't considered a particularly potent offensive team. The righty might face a slightly stiffer challenge when he takes the hill again Wednesday against the Brewers.

Arrieta (1-0) picked up the win Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over six innings in a 5-1 victory over the Pirates. He struck out five.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander is no longer the dominant force who won a Cy Young Award with the Cubs in 2015, but Arrieta still had a successful start to his second stint in Chicago. He threw 53 of 84 pitches for strikes and shut down the Bucs after they squeezed across a run in the first inning to pick up the quality start. Arrieta will get a rematch with the Pirates in his next scheduled start Thursday in Pittsburgh.

Arrieta is expected to begin the season as the Cubs' No. 2 pitcher, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kyle Hendricks was officially named the Opening Day starter Tuesday, and Arrieta has slotted in behind Hendricks this spring, so that should continue into the regular season. Arrieta struggled the last two seasons in Philadelphia, but perhaps he can turn things around now that he's back in Chicago, where he won the Cy Young Award back in 2015.

Arrieta tossed four innings of one-run ball in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Cleveland. He allowed four hits and struck out five.
EDGE Analysis
This looked like the Arrieta from his previous stint with the Cubs, as he was locked in across the 17 batters he faced. The veteran righty now has a 2.89 ERA and seven strikeouts across 9.1 innings this spring. He's coming off a tough 2020 campaign in which he posted a 5.08 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in nine starts for the Phillies, but he will have the chance to prove he has something left as Chicago's likely No. 2 starter.

Arrieta allowed two runs on four hits and three walks across 3.1 innings in Friday's Cactus League game against the Brewers. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
Arrieta was not as sharp as he was in his first spring start, when he tossed two scoreless innings with just one hit and one walk allowed. On a more positive note, the veteran recorded his first two strikeouts of the spring and increased his workload. Arrieta will likely serve as the No. 2 starter behind Kyle Hendricks in his first season back with Chicago. He'll be looking to rebound from the 5.08 ERA and 1.51 WHIP he posted in nine starts last season.
