Freddy Garcia struggled mightily in his first spring training start, allowing five runs (four earned) in Sunday's 8-3 loss to the Mariners. The Mariners opened the game with five straight hits, including a three-run home run by Raul Ibanez. It was an appalingly bad showing for a pitcher trying to win a roster spot during spring training. Garcia also hit a batter and finished with 34 pitches in just one inning of work. There's very little appeal here in fantasy, even if Garcia manages to crack the Padres' Opening Day rotation.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Freddy Garcia would have a base salary of $1.3 million if he makes the Padres. Garcia signed a minor league deal with the Padres on Monday and will compete for a rotation spot during spring training. The veteran right-hander could make an additional $1.25 million in incentives, which means he could max out at $2.55 million.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Padres have signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract. It's a pretty nice landing spot for Garcia, as he gets to pitch in a cavernous home park and should have a pretty good shot at winning a rotation spot. The veteran right-hander posted a 5.20 ERA in 30 appearances -- 17 starts -- with the Yankees in 2012, but he put up a 3.62 ERA over 146 2/3 frames for them in 2011.

According to the Miami Herald, Freddy Garcia has expressed interest in playing for the Marlins. Garcia has been linked to the Twins and Rockies so far this offseason, and is marketing himself as both a starting pitcher and reliever. He posted a 5.20 ERA in 30 appearances (17 starts) with the Yankees in 2012. While the Marlins don't currently have a spot for him in their rotation, he could provide insurance behind Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob Turner.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty denied a report that the club is interested in free agent right-hander Freddy Garcia. CBS' Sports Jon Heyman mentioned the Reds, Rockies and Twins among the teams who have checked in on Garcia, but Jocketty doesn't consider him a fit. "We've got good depth," said Jocketty. "There'd be no opportunity for him with us." Garcia, 36, posted a 5.20 ERA in 17 starts and 13 relief appearances with the Yankees in 2012.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports the Twins are among the teams that have checked in on Freddy Garcia. Heyman also lists the Rockies and Reds as having interest. Coming off a down season, Garcia is being considered as a potential stopgap by starter-needy teams. He posted a 5.20 ERA in 30 appearances (17 starts) with the Yankees in 2012 but has an average of 10 wins over the last three seasons.

The Yankees have pushed back Freddy Garcia's next start from Saturday against the Orioles to Tuesday against the Rays. No word on the reason for the change, but they may have just preferred these particular matchups. Hiroki Kuroda, David Phelps and Phil Hughes will now pitch against the Orioles this weekend while CC Sabathia, Garcia and Kuroda will pitch against the Rays next week.

Freddy Garcia held the Rangers to two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings Wednesday, improving to 7-5 in New York's 3-2 win. He struck out six. Both runs came via solo shots off the bat of Josh Hamilton, who got Garcia in the fourth and sixth. The quality outing was his fourth in five starts. The owner of a 4.68 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 64/22 K/BB ratio through 84 2/3 frames, Garcia has proven surprisingly serviceable for the Bombers. He'll get the White Sox in Chicago on Monday.

Freddy Garcia was solid in a loss to the Orioles Monday, giving up three runs on nine hits over six innings of work. He struck out two, didn't walk anyone and served up a homer to Wilson Betemit. Though he's been far from dominant, Garcia has proved to be perfectly capable since re-entering the rotation, allowing more than three runs to cross the plate just one time in six starts. He'll bring a 5.10 ERA and 1.39 WHIP into this weekend's start against the Mariners.

Freddy Garcia gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the A's. It's Garcia's first loss since April 28, as he had been 2-0 in three starts since returning to the Yankees rotation. One bad outing shouldn't cost him his spot.
