Eric Stults gave up five runs on eight hits over seven innings in a loss Sunday against the Giants. Stults had been serviceable to this point, but these are the type of games you have to expect from him. He had just two strikeouts and allowed a two-run homer to Buster Posey. Stults is no more than an NL-only option.

The soft-tossing left-hander will take on the Giants next.

The 33-year-old lefty has an ugly 6.92 ERA in 13 innings this spring, but he is still expected to open the season in the Padres' starting rotation. Stults posted a 2.91 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 15 starts and five relief appearances last season.

A host of pitchers will compete for the No. 5 spot if Cashner starts the year on the DL.

His only real mistake came in the first, where he served up a three-run homer to Hunter Pence. The quality start was his third straight, and sixth in seven outings. The impending free agent finishes 2012 the owner of a 2.92 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 55/27 K/BB ratio through 99 innings.

Eric Stults turned in a quality start in Tuesday's loss to the Diamondbacks, surrendering three runs on five hits over six innings of work. He struck out six on the night. Miguel Montero was responsible for most of the damage, smacking a pair of RBI doubles. Stults has done a very nice job since rejoining the Padres rotation on August 6, posting a 5-1 record, 2.37 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over eight starts. He'll look to keep the ball rolling when he takes on the Dodgers at home on Wednesday.
