Descalso was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
This helps explain why Descalso hasn't seen any action since Tuesday. The move is retroactive to Wednesday, making the utility man eligible to return in a week should he prove ready. Derek Holland was added to the active roster in a corresponding move. David Bote and Ian Happ should handle utility duties in his absence.

Descalso is starting at second base and batting eighth in Sunday's game against the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
Descalso has fallen behind Addison Russell and David Bote in the pecking order at second base, which isn't surprising given his .185/.283/.272 slash line this season. He did post a .789 OPS last year in Arizona, so perhaps he'll be able to improve somewhat on this year's .555 mark, though he'll have to do so in limited playing time.

Descalso went 0-for-2 with a walk in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Rockies and is now batting .194 this season.
EDGE Analysis
At the end of April, Descalso was slashing a respectable .263/.349/.408, but the wheels have come off since then. From May 1 onward, the veteran is hitting just .107/.203/.143, with more strikeouts (18) than hits and walks combined (13). As a result, David Bote and Addison Russell have both seemingly leapfrogged Descalso in the second base pecking order, which has great reduced the latter's fantasy value.

Descalso is not in the lineup for Sunday's game at St. Louis.
EDGE Analysis
Descalso will sit for the fourth straight game after slashing .094/.183/.132 in May, though he did notch a hit in Saturday's pinch-hit appearance. Addison Russell will start at the keystone and bat seventh in the series finale.

Descalso remains on the bench Friday against the Cardinals.
EDGE Analysis
Descalso is hitting a miserable .094/.169/.132 in the month of May, so it would hardly be surprising to see him stuck on the bench on a more regular basis. Addison Russell gets the start at second base.

Descalso is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Astros.
EDGE Analysis
Descalso is hitting just .094/.169/.132 through 23 games this month, so he'll take a seat on the bench for Wednesday's series finale as he looks to clear his head. David Bote is starting at the keystone in place of Descalso on Wednesday.

Descalso is not in Saturday's lineup against the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran second baseman is hitting just .114 with a 29.2 percent strikeout rate in 44 at-bats this month. Addison Russell will start at second base, hitting eighth.

Descalso is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Phillies.
EDGE Analysis
The playing-time battle between Descalso and Addison Russell was muddled in the last two days by the absence of Javier Baez (heel) opening up spots for both to start. Baez is back Wednesday, pushing Russell to second base and Descalso to the bench.

Descalso is not starting Saturday against the Nationals.
EDGE Analysis
Descalso still seems to be the Cubs' primary second baseman despite the return of Addison Russell, as he started four of the last five games prior to Saturday's contest. He went just 2-for-14 over that stretch, however, so his hold on the starting job isn't likely to be a particularly strong one.
