He's slated to make his next start at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.

Friday's outing was a strong rebound for Buchholz after getting shelled for six runs in three innings in his previous start. While it's been another up-and-down season for the 32-year-old right-hander as he fluctuates between the bullpen and a spot starter role, his pitching has improved notably over the second half, with his 4.08 ERA and 1.21 WHIP down from 5.91 and 1.49, respectively.

Buchholz had pitched well over the past six weeks as both a starter and reliever, but Sunday was his worst effort since his resurrection in late July. In three starts since Buchholz lost his regular rotation spot July 2, he has allowed just three runs with an 18:2 K:BB over 19 innings. His ERA is still an ugly 4.99, but in this form he could be worth a gamble for teams looking for a spark plug to a late run for glory.

Buchholz has been confirmed as the Red Sox's starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Padres, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

After being exiled from the rotation earlier this season, Buchholz will regain a starting spot with Steven Wright dealing with a shoulder problem that could threaten his availability for the final month of the campaign. Wright is set to receive an evaluation within the next few days while the Red Sox remain in San Diego, so Buchholz should soon gain some further clarity on his role the rest of the way. The matchup with the light-hitting Padres is a good one on paper for Buchholz, but the right-hander's crooked numbers as a starter this season (5.63 ERA/5.68 FIP in 88 innings) make him a risky roll of the dice in both season-long and DFS formats.

Steven Wright's shoulder is still an issue, so he will need to be skipped at least one more time in the rotation. Buchholz allowed just two runs while striking out 12 over 12.1 innings in his last two fill-in starts, and given the matchup, he makes for an intriguing streaming option Tuesday.

A Buchholz fastball caught more of the plate than catcher Bryan Holaday wanted and Longoria didn't miss it, belting a mammoth home run out of Fenway Park. Buchholz will still be in the mix for late-inning work, but we expect to see Brad Ziegler, who was unavailable Tuesday because of the flu, the next time a tight situation crops up in the eighth inning.

While it was a low-leverage situation -- Boston was leading 9-3 when Buchholz emerged from the bullpen -- it was the second straight appearance in which he's pitched the eighth inning. Boston manager John Farrell is trying to shore up the bridge to closer Craig KImbrel and Buchholz is the latest reliever. The manager doesn't have a reliable set up guy at this time -- Junichi Tazawa and Matt Barnes have blown up, Brad Ziegler's splits against left-handed batters aren't pretty, and Koji Uehara is working his way back from a pectoral injury. His performance Monday -- he loaded the bases with no outs before getting out of it relatively unharmed -- was not a good sign, but the right-hander has pitched very well in the month of August (2.57 ERA).

Buchholz came into Saturday's game in the eighth inning, pitching a scoreless inning in Boston's 8-3 win over the Royals.

EDGE Analysis

It wasn't exactly a high-leverage spot, but don't be surprised to see Buchholz get some of those opportunities going forward. He's in the midst of his best stretch of pitching this season and manager John Farrell hinted to Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com that Buchholz could be part of the mix for eighth-inning work along with Brad Ziegler.

Buchholz will move back into a bullpen role, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.

EDGE Analysis

Filling in for the injured Steven Wright and Eduardo Rodriguez, Buchholz showed improvement in his latest stint in the rotation, working to a 2.70 ERA over three starts -- including a nine strikeout performance his last time out. With Rodriguez set to return though, the 32-year-old will head back to the bullpen, where he's been effective to the tune of a 3.20 ERA and remain a candidate for spot starts going forward.
