Cesar Ramos pitched 5 1/3 innings out of the pen on Saturday, allowing two runs for a save against the Pirates. Ramos has made just three starts in 143 appearances as a major leaguer, but he's in the running for the fifth spot in Tampa Bay's rotation with Jeremy Hellickson out. He's given up four runs in nine innings this spring.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said Tuesday that Cesar Ramos is in the mix for the club's No. 5 starter job. Ramos will start Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees and try to make a good impression. The 29-year-old left-hander registered a 4.14 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 53/22 K/BB ratio in 67 1/3 innings last season out of the Tampa Bay bullpen. He is unlikely to be fantasy-relevant in 2014, no matter the role.

Rays avoided arbitration with LHP Cesar Ramos by agreeing to a one-year, $749,750 contract. It was Ramos' first year of arbitration eligibility. The left-hander put up a 4.14 ERA over 48 appearances for the Rays in 2013 and will operate in a middle relief role again in 2014.

Cesar Ramos has been added to Mexico's roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Ramos had a 2.10 ERA and 29/10 K/BB ratio over 30 innings last season in the majors. The 28-year-old southpaw is out of options this spring, so he has a good shot to make the Rays' Opening Day roster.
