Bruce Chen will not pitch for China in the World Baseball Classic. Chen pitched for Panama during the 2009 WBC, but he wanted to pitch for China this time around because he's of Chinese descent. However, it was just taking too long for him to be certified to pitch for China, so he has decided not to participate.

Bruce Chen will pitch for China in the World Baseball Classic. Chen is of Chinese descent but was born in Panama and played for them during the 2009 WBC, pitching well enough to earn a deal with the Royals. The left-hander will compete for the Royals' No. 5 starter job in 2013.

Bruce Chen surrendered six runs -- two earned -- on 10 hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings in Monday's loss to the Tigers. A David Lough error allowed Chen to lower his ERA to an ugly 5.07, but he obviously wasn't sharp in this one. He finishes the year having served up 33 home runs, which is currently good for the fourth-highest total in the league. Chen will make $4.5 million in his final year with the Royals next year.

Bruce Chen pitched decently in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers, allowing just two runs on over 6 2/3 innings. He walked three while striking out five. After tallying two runs in the first, it looked like the Tigers had Chen on the ropes in the second inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and had the heart of the order coming up, but Chen induced a weak fly ball from Omar Infante then impressively punched out Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. He'll head into his season finale against these same Tigers at home on Monday with an 11-13 record and 5.13 ERA

Bruce Chen held the White Sox to five hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings of Wednesday's 3-0 victory. Chen struck out four and walked three in improving to 11-12. The scoreless outing was just Chen's fourth of the season, and comes after he allowed at least five runs in three consecutive starts coming into this evening. Under contract for $4.5 million in 2012, Chen is the owner of a 5.22 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 132/43 K/BB ratio through 179 1/3 innings this season.

Bruce Chen turned in another awful performance in Saturday's loss to the White Sox, allowing five runs on six hits over his six innings. Chen walked two and struck out six on the afternoon. Most of the damage stemmed from his inability to keep the ball in the yard, as Dayan Viciedo, Tyler Flowers and Paul Konerko each blasted homers in the game. With the poor outing, Chen falls to 10-12 on the season with an abysmal 5.36 ERA. He'll attempt to get back in the win column when he takes on the Angels at home on Friday.

Bruce Chen baffled the Tigers in Wednesday's 1-0 victory, allowing just five baserunners in eight scoreless frames. Chen struck out four, walked one and allowed four hits in improving to 10-10 on the season. The eight-inning start was his first of the year, while the scoreless outing was only his third. In the first year of a two-year deal, Chen is the owner of a 5.13 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 112/36 K/BB ratio through 154 1/3 frames. He'll get the Rangers at home on Monday. Keep him benched for that one.

Bruce Chen allowed four runs on four hits, three walks and two home runs in 5 1/3 innings of Sunday's loss to the Orioles. Chen served up bombs to Nick Markakis and rookie Manny Machado in falling to 8-10. He's now been quality in only two of his seven starts since the All-Star break. Chen will bring a 5.56 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 95/32 K/BB ratio into his Saturday start agains the White Sox at home.

Bruce Chen turned in a rare quality start in Saturday's loss to the Mariners, surrendering three runs on seven hits over his six frames. Chen fanned five and walked just one on the evening. He had been absolutely brutal over his previous four starts, so this was a much welcomed improvement from the veteran left-hander. All of the damage came in the third inning, where Jesus Montero belted a two-run homer and Miguel Olivo followed with an RBI single later in the inning. Chen will take a 7-9 record and uninspiring 5.49 ERA into Friday's home start against the Rangers.

Bruce Chen improved upon his previous three outings on Wednesday but still struggled against the Mariners, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The positive thing to take away from this performance is that he racked up six strikeouts without walking a batter. Still, Chen remains far too hittable to have sustained success in a major-league rotation, and the Royals would probably be better-served looking for a better alternative. He'll take a 7-8 record and 5.57 ERA into Anaheim, where he'll battle the Angels on Monday.
