Oberholtzer acknowledged Sunday that he seems to be ticketed for a bullpen role to start the season, the Phillies' official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
Oberholtzer is scheduled to pitch in back-to-back games as a reliever later this week. He had been competing with Vince Velasquez and Adam Morgan for the final spot in the Phillies' rotation. He could be the first option to join the rotation if an injury creates an opening.

Oberholtzer pitched three scoreless innings in Monday's win over the Pirates. He allowed four hits, struck out one and did not walk a batter.
EDGE Analysis
Oberholtzer is in the mix for the Phillies' fifth starter job. His primary competition is Vince Velasquez, who also pitched well Monday. If Oberholtzer does not win a starting job, he will likely open the year in the pen as he is out of minor league options.

Oberholtzer will compete for the fifth spot in the Phillies' rotation this spring, the team's official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
Oberholtzer came over to the Phillies as part of the Ken Giles trade this offseason. He was 2-2 with a 4.46 ERA and a 27:17 K:BB ratio in 38.1 innings for the Astros last season. He will compete with Vincent Velasquez, Adam Morgan, David Buchanan, Alec Asher and Severino Gonzalez this spring. If Oberholtzer does not win a starting job, he will likely open the year in the pen as he is out of minor league options.

Oberholtzer was traded to the Phillies on Wednesday as part of a package for Ken Giles, Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston reports.
EDGE Analysis
Oberholtzer started just eight games for the Astros last season after starting 24 the previous year, so the team decided he was worth parting with in order to acquire Giles. Oberholtzer has not been able to lock up a regular big league role just yet, but he does own a respectable 3.94 ERA at the major league level across 253.2 innings. He will likely get a shot to compete for a spot in the Phillies' starting rotation during spring training.

Oberholtzer was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Oberholtzer allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three batters in his 5.0 inning outing Thursday against Cleveland. He was recalled Wednesday to make the spot start and was sent back down to Triple-A on Friday as the Astros reinstated Chad Qualls from this disabled list.

Oberholtzer (2-2) gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one in five innings against the Indians on Thursday. Oberholtzer, who was recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Wednesday, bounced back from his previous start when he allowed six runs in 1.1 innings. The 26-year-old took a shutout into the sixth before Cleveland scored three times. The Astros will likely option Oberholtzer after the All-Star break in order to move Vincent Velasquez back into the rotation.

Oberholtzer will be recalled to start Thursday's game against the Indians, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports. Vincent Velasquez was optioned to Double-A following Tuesday's quality start as an innings saving measure, so Oberholtzer will get the leftover start this week. He has a 4.32 ERA in seven starts for the Astros this season and can hardly match Velasquez's upside, so it would not be surprising to see the Astros move Velasquez back into the rotation and option Oberholtzer after the All-Star break.

Oberholtzer was optioned to Triple-A Fresno following Saturday's game against the Yankees. Oberholtzer allowed six earned runs on four hits and three walks before being ejected in the second inning of Sunday's game. He'd pitched well in his previous starts, so it's a bit puzzling why the team would demote him just because of Sunday's contest, but the team announced a corresponding move to be made Monday.

Oberholtzer was ejected from Saturday's game after throwing at Alex Rodriguez in the second inning. He allowed four hits, two home runs, and three walks in just 1.1 innings of work. Oberholtzer threw at Rodriguez directly after allowing a two-run shot to Chris Young in the top of the second inning. He had strung together three straight solid starts before Saturday's meltdown, striking out 15 batters over 20 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next start Friday in Boston.
