Branbon League notched the win in relief as the Dodgers beat the Giants 3-2 on Monday to stay alive in NL wild card race. The Dodgers are two behind the Cardinals with two to play, so they can be eliminated with one more St. Louis victory. They won tonight when Elian Herrera singled in Hanley Ramirez in the bottom of the ninth. League pitched a scoreless top of the ninth, giving him a 2.39 ERA in 26 1/3 innings for L.A. He's been a nice pickup for Ned Colletti.

Filling in for Kenley Jansen, Brandon League pitched a scoreless ninth in a one-run game for a save Saturday against the Diamondbacks. League struck out two in the frame. He and Ronald Belisario could split save chances for as long as Jansen is out.

Dodgers acquired RHP Brandon League from Mariners for OF Leon Landry and RHP Logan Bawcom. League has a 3.63 ERA and 27/19 K/BB ratio over 44 2/3 innings this season. He was removed from the closer role after a rough stretch earlier this season, but has pitched quite well in a set-up role recently. Still, the Mariners would have done a lot better had they traded him when his value was high over the winter. The 29-year-old right-hander will be a free agent following the season.

According to FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi, the Dodgers have "inquired on" the Mariners' Brandon League. The Giants are also known to have serious interest. League, 29, has posted a 3.63 ERA in 44 2/3 innings of relief this season out of the Seattle 'pen. He would be a nice fit in a setup role with any contending team.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Mariners are close to trading Brandon League. The destination isn't known yet, but the Giants and Angels are known to have interest. League went through a rough stretch earlier this season but has pitched very well of late, putting up a 1.96 ERA since the beginning of June.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge said he's pleased with how Brandon League has been throwing the ball lately and will put him back in the closer role "sooner than later." League has allowed just one run while striking out six and walking one over 6 2/3 frames since being removed from the closer role late last month. Tom Wilhelmsen has looked very good while converting all three save chances since taking over in the ninth inning, but it sounds like he'll be back in a setup role soon.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Mainers have "received some inquiries" on Brandon League. It's no surprise, as League has been viewed as a likely trade chip for the M's at the deadline. Cafardo didn't mention which teams have asked Seattle about him, but League could be used in a setup or closing role for whichever team acquires him.

Brandon League pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn a hold Monday against the Angels. League did allow an RBI single to Mike Trout after taking over for Jason Vargas in the sixth, but he finished out the inning from there, and after walking Albert Pujols to start the seventh, he struck out the last three batters he faced. It was a positive outing as he attempts to regain the closer's role in Seattle.

The Mariners have removed Brandon League from their closer role. "We'll match up with what we think works," manager Eric Wedge said. ''It's not ideal, but this is where we're at. We're not going to name another closer.'' No current reliever on the Mariners' staff has a save this season other than League, but setup man Tom Wilhelmsen figures to be the early favorite for ninth-inning opportunities going forward. Shawn Kelley, Charlie Furbush, and Steve Delabar could all also get looks in certain situations.

Brandon League surrendered three runs -- two earned -- in an inning while blowing his fourth save Friday night against the Angels. League's own error led to the game-tying run, and then he gave up two more runs after intentionally walking Kole Calhoun to face pinch-hitter Howie Kendrick. League had an awful run last May, recovered and put together a great season for the Mariners. The team will hope the same thing happens this year. He's really struggling at the moment, but if he's pulled from the closer's role, it figures to be a temporary measure.
