No surprise here, as Clifford has operated as Green Bay's primary backup all through training camp and the preseason thus far. He beat out Alex McGough for the opportunity to back up Jordan Love under center. The rookie fifth-round pick is second in passing yards (345) among all quarterbacks through two preseason games.

Clifford completed 20 of 26 passes for 208 yards in Friday's 36-19 preseason victory over the Bengals. He threw a touchdown pass, was intercepted twice and added two carries for 27 yards.

EDGE Analysis

The interceptions -- one of which was returned for a touchdown -- were hardly ideal, but the fifth-round rookie otherwise impressed in his first appearance as a professional, displaying good accuracy and making plays with both his arm and his feet. Clifford is not pushing Jordan Love for the starting quarterback job by any means, but Friday's showing all but locks him in as Green Bay's backup quarterback to kick off the 2023 campaign.

The Packers selected Clifford in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 149th overall.

EDGE Analysis

Clifford started 46 games at Penn State and kept Will Levis -- a second-round selection in the 2023 draft -- on the bench. He is fearless in the pocket and has decent mobility, but he lacks arm strength, a factor that will likely limit him to a backup role throughout his NFL career. In the short term, he'll battle with Danny Etling for the second quarterback job in Green Bay.
