The Bills need Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa and veteran Von Miller to key their pass rush in 2024 after notably only adding fifth-round rookie Javon Solomon off the edge and losing Leonard Floyd's 10.5 sacks in free agency.

Rousseau completed the 2023 regular season with 42 tackles (including 5.0 sacks), four passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Rousseau saw a career-high snaps on defense (558), so perhaps it's a bit disappointing that he fell eight tackles short of his rookie season and 3.0 sacks short of the career-high 8.0 he posted in 2022. With the playoff perennial Bills facing so much turnover on both sides of the ball, the 2021 first-rounder may be expected to hit another gear if the team is to take a fifth straight AFC East title. A.J. Epenesa has already proven capable of helping Rousseau with the pass rush on the other side of the line, but everyone could gain if Von Miller, who's missed significant time the past two seasons, can consistently spark the pass rush.

Rousseau had two tackles, one pass defensed and half a sack during Buffalo's 20-17 win over the Chiefs on Sunday.

Perhaps the 2021 first-rounder hasn't been as dynamic as was hoped during his third season, but the Buffalo pass rush has been strong all season and Rousseau has been a key part of it. He stands at 32 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, four passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on the season. With the Bills facing a number of injuries on defense, Rousseau's performance down the stretch will be key as the team tries to scratch out a playoff spot.

Rousseau (foot) does not carry an injury designation ahead of Sunday's game versus the Giants.

EDGE Analysis

After sitting out in Week 5 versus Jacksonville with a foot injury, Rousseau will be available for Week 6. He should step right back into a significant role on Buffalo's defensive line Sunday.

Coach Sean McDermott said Friday that Rousseau (foot) is ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jaguars, Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News reports.

Rousseau popped up with a foot injury that forced him to miss practice Wednesday, and he will need to miss at least one game as he works his way back to full health. In Rousseau's stead, A.J. Epenesa will stand to handle an expanded role on defense versus Jacksonville.

The 8.0 sacks -- which co-led the team with Von Miller -- is the number that sticks out the most considering Rousseau missed time with an ankle injury and also that the Bills typically rotate their defensive linemen more than most teams. He also stepped it up after Miller was lost for the season with a knee injury. Rousseau has mammoth size and has now proven a knack for getting after the quarterback, so he could be relied upon for more in the 2023 season, as the Bills have some cap issues and likely won't be able to run as deep as they have the last two seasons.

Rousseau (ankle) was a full participant in practice Monday.

EDGE Analysis

Rousseau said Sunday that he feels close to full health, and Monday's full participation backs up that notion. After missing Buffalo's previous three games, Rousseau's poised to return for Thursday's road game in New England.

Rousseau has posted 5.0 sacks through just eight games, and with Von Miller being out at least a week or two with a knee injury, the second-year pass rusher's presence would be highly welcomed as the Bills make a push for a division crown in what's been a highly competitive AFC East all season. The Bills play their next three games against division foes, beginning with Thursday's game against the rival Patriots.
