Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday that Robert Andino has replaced Brendan Ryan as the team's regular shortstop. Ryan is arguably the game's best defensive shortstop, but he's hitting .143 (8-for-56) this season and has a .530 OPS dating back to the start of last season. Of course, Andino owns a .233/.294/.321 batting line and a .615 OPS, so it's doubtful he'll be an upgrade. Still, he could be worth a flier in AL-only formats.

Mariners re-signed INF Robert Andino to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. It was a surprising move to see him non-tendered, so this gives some clarity to the situation. He'll compete with Brendan Ryan for the Mariners' starting shortstop job.

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said new acquisition Robert Andino will be given a chance to compete for the starting job at shortstop. Brendan Ryan is the best defensive shortstop in the game, but he hit just .194 with a .555 OPS this season. While Ryan is probably still the favorite for the gig, the M's aren't pigeon-holing Andino as utility guy. "Anybody you bring in, you don't put limitations on," Zduriencik said. "I talked to Robert and he said, 'I've been a shortstop my whole life. I played a lot of second base these last few years, but I'm a shortstop in my heart of hearts.' So I told him to work hard this offseason and then come in and compete for a position. Don't put any limitations on yourself and we won't put any on you. As far as I'm concerned, he's one of our players and will come in and compete for a position."

Mariners acquired INF Robert Andino from the Orioles for OF Trayvon Robinson. Andino batted .211/.283/.305 with seven home runs, 28 RBI and a .588 OPS in 431 plate appearances with the Orioles this season while earning $1.3 million. He's arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter. The Mariners will likely use him as a backup at second base and shortstop.

Robert Andino will undergo one more concussion test before Sunday's game, but maintains hope that he'll be able to return to the lineup for the series finale against the Red Sox. Early reports were that he passed his baseline concussion tests before Saturday's game, but that they wanted him to rest another day as a precautionary measure. As long as he passes again on Sunday morning, expect him to start at second base.

Robert Andino experienced a scary moment in Friday's game against the Red Sox, getting beaned in the helmet during his ninth-inning at-bat. He remained on his feet, but was removed from the game as a precautionary measure. After the game, he went through concussion tests and underwent a CT scan, the results of which should be known on Saturday.

Robert Andino went hitless in a third straight game Saturday, dropping his average to .211. Andino hit .311 during April, but he's at .184 in 282 at-bats since and he's 5-for-43 this month. The Orioles should seriously consider giving more time to either Omar Quintanilla or Steve Tolleson.

Robert Andino (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday. Andino went 1-for-5 with an RBI in his first rehab game with Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday and is slated to play another one on Monday. He'll take over as the regular second baseman upon his return, as Brian Roberts is expected to miss the rest of the season following hip surgery.
