Erlin was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Erlin struggled with the Chihuahuas since being demoted June 16, posting a 6.14 ERA with six punchouts over 7.1 frames, but he'll see another opportunity out of the bullpen with San Diego. Phil Maton was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Erlin was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Erlin had a rough outing Saturday with six runs allowed over 2.1 innings, and he'll make his way to El Paso in favor of a fresh arm. Brad Wieck was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Erlin (0-1) allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk across two innings while taking a loss against the Blue Jays on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Starting on short notice because Chris Paddack was scratched with a neck issue, Erlin was never expected to pitch deep into this game. His 41 pitches was his most in an appearance since April 9; it was just unfortunate it took him that many pitches to record six outs. Erlin didn't pitch poorly, but he took the loss since he exited with a deficit, and the Padres never tied the game again. Erlin is 0-1 with a 3.70 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 28 strikeouts in 24.1 innings over 16 appearances this season.

Erlin will start Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Scheduled starter Chris Paddack was a late scratch due to a neck issue, pushing Erlin into the starting role. Erlin has a 3.63 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 26:4 K:BB this season, but will likely have a limited pitch count given he hasn't exceeded 40 pitches in an appearance since April 9. It seems likely to be a bullpen day for the Padres, while the newly recalled Luis Perdomo could be used to help cover some innings.

Erlin was called up from High-A Lake Elsinore on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Erlin's stay in the minors was likely always expected to be a brief one, as he was sent to the team's nearby High-A affiliate rather than heading all the way to Texas and Triple-A El Paso. He'll replace Phil Maton, who was optioned to El Paso in a corresponding move.

Erlin was sent to High-A Lake Elsinore on Thursday rather than Triple-A El Paso as initially reported.
EDGE Analysis
The assignment is clearly not purely for baseball reasons, as Erlin hasn't played at the High-A level since 2011. The reason is likely geographical, as the Padres can have Erlin on hand in southern California rather than all the way out in Texas. That could suggest that his return to the big leagues is imminent.

Erlin will be optioned to Triple-A El Paso prior to Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Padres will temporarily add a sixth member to the starting rotation in Pedro Avila, and Erlin will be demoted to make room on the 25-man roster. Erlin has a 4.32 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB over 8.1 innings out of the bullpen through the first two weeks of the season.

Erlin is expected to open the season in the Padres' bullpen, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Erlin entered camp with what appeared to be a great chance at making the Padres' rotation, but he appears to have removed himself from consideration after giving up 11 runs on 14 hits and four walks through his first 9.1 innings of Cactus League play. When deployed in relief last season, Erlin thrived to the tune of a 2.05 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in 52.2 innings, so he could be tabbed for a prominent role out of the bullpen to begin 2019. Erlin's demotion probably carries more important fantasy implications for the likes of young starters Chris Paddack and Logan Allen, who now both have greater chances of cracking the season-opening rotation with another arm removed from the competition.

Erlin and the Padres agreed to a one-year, $1.45 million deal Wednesday, avoiding arbitration, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Erlin made 12 starts and 27 relief appearances for the Padres last season, finishing with a modest 4.21 ERA. His 3.31 FIP suggests room for positive regression, however, earned on the back of a sparkling 2.7 percent walk rate. He lines up as a likely rotation member heading into the upcoming season.

Erlin allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out four over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Giants. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Erlin turned in a solid performance Tuesday, allowing an unearned run in the first and a solo home run to Hunter Pence in the fifth for the only marks on his ledger. The southpaw has continued to struggle going deep into outings, falling short of six innings in all but one of his 12 starts. Barring a change of plans, Erlin's 2018 season is likely over. He'll close the campaign with a 4.21 ERA and 88:12 K:BB over 109 innings in 39 appearances.
