The utility infielder has gotten regular playing time with Asdrubal Cabrera sidelined, but he should return to a reserve role when Cabrera returns. He's hitting .277 on the year.

Mike Aviles finished 3-for-4 in the Indians' loss to the Nationals on Saturday in Cleveland. Aviles had a double in the third inning, a single in the fifth and a second double in the ninth. He has struggled for the most part this season but may be a decent fill-in for Troy Tulowitzki owners over the next several weeks.

Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, also guaranteed a second round appearance at 2-0, will play for seeding at 7:30 PM ET. The winner will play the runner-up of Pool D in the second round while the loser will play the winner of Pool D.

Indians and INF Mike Aviles avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year contract with an option for 2015.

Indians acquired INF Mike Aviles and INF/C Yan Gomes from the Blue Jays for RHP Esmil Rogers Aviles was part of the Blue Jays' compensation for manager John Farrell, but made $1.2 million in 2012 and is arbitration for the second time this winter. Gomes struggled in limited action last season, hitting just .204/.264/.367 with four home runs in 43 games. Rogers will compete for a spot in the Toronto bullpen in spring training.

Mike Aviles (toe) is out of the starting lineup again Wednesday. Aviles hasn't played since Saturday due to turf toe. He was given a pain-killing injection on Tuesday, so his timetable will depend on how the injury responds. Pedro Ciriaco will continue to hold down the shortstop gig for now.
