Gonzalez will be shut down for 2-to-3 weeks after an MRI revealed he is dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports. Gonzalez missed time last season with a shoulder injury, and he will do so again in 2015. He will be reevaluated later this month, and the Phillies will determine the next step at this point, but don't expect to see him pitching for the big club any time soon.

Gonzalez was outrighted off the 40-man roster Wednesday. Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Sunday, but has now officially been removed from the 40-man roster. With the move, it will be more difficult for him to secure a spot in the starting rotation even if an injury occurs, and he'll likely serve as organizational depth in 2015.

The Phillies optioned Gonzalez to the minors on Sunday, CSN Philadelphia reports. Gonzalez was competing for a starting job this spring, but did not pitch well. He allowed 12 earned runs on 25 hits, including five home runs. He is expected to remain in a starting role at Triple-A Lehigh Valley and could join the Phillies later this season.

Manager Ryne Sandberg indicated Wednesday that Gonzalez remains in competition for the final spot in the Phillies' rotation, CSN Philadelphia reports. Gonzalez hasn't done much this spring to earn the job. He was hit hard Wednesday and now has a 7.53 ERA this spring. He is competing with Kevin Slowey and Sean O'Sullivan for what is likely a temporary starting spot as Chad Billingsley is expected to join the rotation two or three weeks into the season.

Gonzalez (knee) allowed two runs and struck out two over three innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox. Gonzalez, who left his last start with a right knee contusion, gave up a two run homer in the first before settling down over the next two innings. He has allowed seven runs on 12 hits this spring (three have been home runs). Gonzalez still has time to earn a rotation spot, but he has likely fallen behind David Buchanan and Kevin Slowey in the competition for the two spots up for grabs.

Gonzalez suffered a right knee contusion Tuesday and was taken out for precautionary reasons, Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News reports. He took a come-backer off the knee Tuesday, but plans to pitch in his next scheduled outing, so there should be no change in the way he is viewed by fantasy owners.

Gonzalez exited Tuesday's spring game after being struck on the right leg by a batted ball, CSN's Jim Salisbury reports. The extent of Gonzalez's setback is uncertain, but he limped off the field after being struck by a comebacker. Expect Gonzalez's status to be updated as more details become available.
