Manager John Gibbons strongly suggested that Dominguez will be the player called up to replace Drew Hutchison, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star reports.

Dominguez was claimed off waivers by the Brewers on Tuesday, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports. Dominguez was DFA'd by the Astros on June 8 when super prospect Carlos Correa was recalled from Triple-A Fresno. The 25-year-old Dominguez struggled mightily last season, hitting just .215 with 125 strikeouts in 564 at-bats (157 games) for the Astros. He's been nothing more than average this year at Triple-A, posting a .251/.289/.371 slash line in 45 games. Dominguez will join a struggling Brewers organization and report to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Dominguez was designated for assignment Monday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros need a spot on the 40-man roster for top prospect Carlos Correa, who was recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Monday. While 25-year-old players with over 1,200 career big-league at-bats typically aren't available on waivers, Dominguez will likely slide through unclaimed, as he hasn't made any real progress in the batter's box. Following last year's dreadful performance with the Astros, he owns a .251/.289/.371 slash line for Triple-A Fresno this season.

Dominguez is 7-for-34 (.206) with four doubles and nine RBI through nine games for Triple-A Fresno. Dominguez is a strong defender at third base who has shown decent power at the big league level, but the Astros have plenty of depth at the corner infield spots. While an injury would seemingly open the door for a promotion, it's no guarantee that the 25-year-old will see time in Houston this season.

Dominguez was optioned to Astros' minor league camp on Sunday. In 16 Grapefruit League games, Dominguez hit .250 with two RBI and no extra-base hits over 36 at-bats. The 25-year-old will open 2015 with Triple-A Fresno, where he'll get regular at-bats while playing third and first base.

Dominguez will put in some work at first base this spring training as manager A.J. Hinch wants Dominguez to be more versatile, the Astros' official site reports. Hinch said the versatility could help Dominguez make the team out of camp. The Astros have plenty of depth at first base with Jon Singleton, Chris Carter, and Evan Gattis on the team, so it's suspect to even think Dominguez could get enough starts this season to earn first base eligibility.

Dominguez is out of Sunday's lineup against the Mets. After a very weak year at the plate, Dominguez will sit out the season finale with Gregorio Petit taking his place at third.

Dominguez is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Rangers. Dominguez broke out of a cold spell and now has a hit in his past four starts, including three in a row with an RBI. He'll get the day off, with Gregorio Petit assuming third base duties in his place.
